This sounds very similar to the refrain that "Americans WANT large cars".
Americans don't necessarily want large cars.
But the American car market offers almost exclusively large cars, SUVs, and trucks.
Then when Americans buy those, despite some of them looking for smaller, cheaper options in vain, carmakers go, triumphantly, "See? Americans want large cars." But that's all BS.

Good observation! The US market really does seem to push us toward the largest, most polluting and costliest choices.

I want the Volkwagen ID.3 Neo, which is a fully electric the size of a VW Golf, called a "compact" car in the US.

But living in the US I can get neither.

@CelloMomOnCars I feel this in my bones.
I don’t like trucks. I don’t need a truck. I’d like a small 2 door hatchback.
But, when I went to “the market” to look for a small-ish PHEV or HEV that I could mostly daily drive and was affordable, what bubbled up to the top? A pickup. 🤬
Specifically a Hybrid Maverick which gets 45+ MPG and was under $30k
