Given the age of this thing, I am not going to spend especially long on it

I can strip out SSD and RAM, sell those for a little money, maybe even the MagSafe 1 power adapter as well, and then see if someone will take the rest of it for say €15 (the screen works, so someone with one with a defective screen might take it?)

@timo Replace Battery. Oddly though it says this for the old battery, and the new battery it does not recognise at all.

@jon In System Profiler/Power: Battery connected - no?

if the replacement is very discharged, give it a day or so? Do its LEDs on the bottom light up?

@timo This is the generation that has no LEDs on the battery. You have to take the bottom off the laptop to replace the battery.

    System Profiler:
    - Battery Installed: Yes
    - Condition: Replace Now
    - Cycle count: 16 (the battery is new-ish, but was seldom used)
    - Full Charge Capacity (mAh): 5881
    - Charge Remaining (mAh): 5648

@timo The new one does not show *at all*, but the old one - even when I put it back in - shows as present, but not charging (or discharging).

I presume the new one could be entirely discharged and hence shows like this?

My *presumption* is there is some mainboard issue preventing anything being charged.

(I am pretty sure if I could find someone with the same model we could work it out, but I live in the middle of nowhere, so no way)

@jon alright, got it. Could be on the Mac, new battery might be dead. Maybe check its voltage manually. But either way, game over I think.

@timo @jon your presumption is what I was thinking. Connection between the battery and board may be faulty. I imagine you tried this, but if there is a battery cable that goes to the board, maybe clean the connections, reattach, and try again?

@nafmo @jon that‘s roughly 20 years too new for me. 😄 I guess there might be a million things wrong. This is a bit above my abilities. There are MacBook specialists, but I am not one of them…

    @jon
Have you put a DMM over the new battery? I would imagine you'd be seeing something over 3.2 volts if its lithium. If the first number is less than 3 you might need to use a modern trickle charger (sometimes sold 10 for not much more than a $1) that can do super low current charging until it gets some safe amount of charge in it. Then try reinstalling.
That's the only idea I have.

@jon I suppose you've tried switching power cables and/or cleaned the power input port? I had a dirty port once that was interfering with charging.

@DoomsdaysCW Pretty sure it is not, because everything is up to date. I am going to sell it for spares, maybe someone has a MacBook with a different defect and can cannibalise the two?

@jon I'm sure you tried Shift + Control + Option + Power trick? I think *maybe* it's the motherboard then, which would be a bummer. But it works okay when using the power cable, right?

@DoomsdaysCW Yes, done those key combinations. And yes, when the power supply is connected it works normally. Somehow this is the connection between motherboard and battery, or how the battery charges.

@jon Yeah, so unless you want to go messing around with checking connections on the motherboard, I think the parts idea might be the best option. Bummer! I have a couple of those 2010 MacBooks and they're still working (I use one for music editing, and the other for video editing).

@jon Did you try Command Option P + R? I would do it a couple of times, then Shift + Command + Option. I don't know if Command + S then fsck-fy might help. Those have gotten my old Macs unstuck from various issues.

@jon I kinda suspect the replacement battery is simply dead. Unless you checked it in another MacBook and found it to be working?
