Or just don't log in. Works well for me on #Fairphone OS. At least better than /e/OS used to.
Yes it is. I used a throwaway account to activate it. Now I only have a self-hosted #NextCloud account, connected via the #Davx5 app.
@pdl @kallekn @leffe Great setup, well done! No Google account, F-Droid, Aurora, DNS filtering.
While FairphoneOS still talks to Google by design, account or not (https://www.scss.tcd.ie/doug.leith/apple_google.pdf), blocking all Google domains via Pi-hole does solve this. Two caveats: it can break push notifications, and requires DIY skills. A degoogled OS does all of this out of the box. The pi-hole can be more complete in the sense that you get DNS filtering on your devices at home as well. #degoogle #privacy
@iode @kallekn @leffe Only a few apps support UnifiedPush. That's why I rely on the Google push service. Fennec, Molly, FMD, FOSS Warn, Tusky, DAVx5 use Nextpush for push notifications. There are 2243 names containing "google" in my blocklist (which contains 732842 names). I do not block all google domains. I could use google.com or maps.google.com.
@leffe @kallekn Not logging in helps, but it doesn’t stop this behaviour. Trinity College Dublin researchers tested a stock Android phone with no Google account logged in: it contacted Google every ~4.5 minutes, sending IMEI, serial number, Android ID, SIM and Wi-Fi MAC details. That comes from Google’s own services, so only truly degoogling the OS itself will truly stop telemetry: More: https://blog.iode.tech/ai-mobile-os-integrations-are-planned-obsolescence/
@kallekn @leffe The phone number, no.
From the wiki: In general, we obviously try to minimize the connections to Google, but some services strictly rely on them and would just not work without. Blocking any network requests of microG will thus result in something not working as expected. If you don't need push notifications, you can disable it (and daily device registration) in microG settings to get rid of the corresponding network requests.

My current phone was stock Android, then /e/OS and now iodéOS! The latter move simply because I needed to lock the bootloader to get banking apps working and no other reason.
That said, I am very impressed with both and will never go back to stock Android.
@alexadeswift @murena @efoundation @iode Swedish banking apps work for me on eOS without locked bootloader. But I think you can lock it on eOS too?
Only on certain devices, and unfortunately the banking apps I used did not like /e/OS!
