I'm having a wonderful time in the woods right now, still finding chanterelles and chicken of the woods, but also starting to find maitake and lion's mane. I found my very first black trumpets (Craterellus fallax)! About 3oz worth..I fried up a handful last night to sample them fresh, but I think I will dry most of them. I like it very much. I wonder how many smaller patches of these I've walked right past before? They blend in so well. #nature #fungi #mushroom #mushrooms #mushtodon #foraging
A closeup of a small cluster of young eastern black trumpets growing from moss and leaf litter. They are not fully expanded, and are still an odd greyish-salmon color instead of dark grey/black.
A partial zoom out shows a bit more of the patch and gives a sense of scale for the size of the mushrooms.
A full zoom out shows most of the patch running next to a wide hiking trail. Fully zoomed out, it's difficult to see the mushrooms.
A hand rests next to a few different sizes/maturities of black trumpet mushrooms.

Most likely, you have a few good edibles in your area that have no dangerous lookalikes, such as the Foolproof Four, or even these black trumpets! Barring that, there may be cheap or free opportunities to go out with a group led by a mushroom expert in your area. Don't try to identify every mushroom in the woods, because that's overwhelming..just be sure of the ones you consider putting in your mouth.

I love this. and it's great advice. I think one of the local parks has an expert that holds events from time to time.

Definitely check it out! Even if it ends up not being your thing, anybody that likes nature at all will surely like going once.
