I caught wild hopniss(Apios americana/American groundnut) in bloom at a local park. Depending on whether they are diploid or triploid, these interesting vines produce a chain of edible tubers, as well as edible bean pods. The flowers are also edible, sweet and tasty. They were widely grown and distributed by indigenous people, and my be an indicator that the area was a village, campsite, or alongside a popular game trail. I have not yet been able to determine if the hopniss in our area produces bean pods or not, but I'd love to add some to my garden. #nature #foraging #gardening #apiosamericana
Complicated dusty maroon-purple wisteria-like flowers are clustered on a twining vine with simple, lance-shaped opposite leaves.
Another angle shows a better view of the leaves.
A closeup of two of the flowers. They are semi-enclosed or hooded, and tend to be targeted by specialist bees.
