Anthropic logged net loss of over $80 billion in first half of 2026, WSJ reports
@stacey_campbell Nailed it.
@stacey_campbell I sold half my stocks in August-September. Missed out on some gains for sure, but this market is super bubbly.
@stacey_campbell That's just too funny
@stacey_campbell Just to put Anthropic's losses into perspective.
Let's say you're a well-paid professional who gets paid an average of $100,000 per year pretax. Over a 50-year career, you'll earn $5 million pretax.
In just half a year, Anthropic lost the equivalent of the entire lifetime earnings of 16,000 well-paid professionals who earn $100,000 a year.
@stacey_campbell Let me put it another way.
Think about your employer for a moment. Just imagine what would happen if one year your bosses reported a $1 billion loss.
If you're not in the public sector, there's a good chance the business or organisation you work for would go under.
Well, Anthropic currently loses more than $3 billion *every week*.
@stacey_campbell Let me put it a different way.
Anthropic's revenues are currently $16.8 billion per quarter. With that amount of revenue, it's losing $40 billion a quarter.
That means for every $1 of revenue currently coming in, it would need an additional $2.38 just to break even.
So every $1 of tokens costs the company $3.38 to produce.
@ajsadauskas @stacey_campbell @aj The $80 billion loss is a bit misleading as I understand it.
$72 billion of that is related to "convertable notes" and the increase in the company valuation.
That said, yeah they seem to be running at a loss. And until there's actually audited numbers, it's hard to know the true story.
@troberts @ajsadauskas there is no company valuation. Just wait. @stacey_campbell @aj
@ajsadauskas imagine being a CFO for a shop like this and go "yeah all good, no worries mate" ... @stacey_campbell
@ajsadauskas yeah but it's borrowed money from a circular loan pyramid scheme so it's okay. We're not going to cry if NVIDIA suddenly has to pivot back to providing gamerz with GPUs again. @stacey_campbell
@ajsadauskas @stacey_campbell they didn’t “lose” it, they ignited it into our atmosphere as heat and particles
@andrew_deridder @ajsadauskas @stacey_campbell Well, a lot of that was weird financial bullshit and not real losses. The real losses, IIRC, were only something like $40 billion.
I misread the earlier post and thought we were talking about all of 2025, where I know they had a bunch of weird financial bullshit losses that weren't "real" losses. I can't say that the $80 billion losses for the first half of this year aren't real.
@Azuaron @andrew_deridder @stacey_campbell A $40 billion half-year loss, divided by 26 weeks, means Anthropic is "only" losing $1.5 billion every single week, rather than $3 billion every week.
Most other businesses would either be in liquidation or sold off to private equity if they lost $1.5 billion over a *year*.
That's an obscene amount of money.
@ajsadauskas @andrew_deridder @stacey_campbell Apologies, I actually have to retract what I was saying. I just realized we're talking about the first half of 2026, and not the whole of 2025. The weird financial bullshit happened in 2025; I don't know if any of their 2026 losses were weird financial bullshit or not; they very well might have $80 billion in real losses this year.

this stock market thing you told me was so great, it isn't working ????
