Linus checking in a patch made with an LLM that doesn't work, has a race condition that needs to be fixed, and then writing "I'm going on holiday, can anyone take this over" is peak comedy

Linus is saying the quiet part out loud: AI-native projects are environments where the key ingredient is _capital_. Abstraction can be performed by a quiet appreciation. True automation can be disruptive.

AI-based architectures (again, assuming that the AI works reliably, which is a highly contingent proposition) translate all that stuff into capital flows. A "machine speed" project requires _money_ to participate in, regardless of their complexity.

It is wonderful to see that not all businesspeople are cowards.

Virgin's Richard Branson:

This morning, I have successfully installed #NetBSD on the newish laptop. After 30 years of running Linux exclusively in this house, today is the beginning of a new era. #RUNBSD

“It’s not normal to do this publicly,” the national news notes incredulously, suggesting that the cops have been trying to find someone at Albert Heijn who knows wtf is going on for three days now

Whew! I just finished porting 2,852 lines of PDP-11 assembly to C by hand over the past week!

This is for form/fed, a form letter editor and generator with template substitutions, introduced in 1971. It's the largest UNIX utility that was never ported to C, and has since been forgotten.

Turns out AI can cause more problems than it solves. Cleaning up AI slop is one issue. 36% of AI execs at companies with $1B+ in annual rev reported an AI incident that led to data loss, financial damage, brand damage or operational disruptions. Major companies are now limiting employee AI usage. https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2026/oct/13/ai-companies-rushed-workers-fallout

this is a useful point to make clear "holy shit, if you think AI is your friend or lover or confidante" you are deep deep deep into LLM psychosis and need treatment ASAP

Fucking disgraceful, this Government are as bad as Trump.

Petty, and vindictive, another stain on Human Rights in this country

@glyph I've been saying this for years ever since "it just speeds up the boilerplate" first ruffled my feathers and I had to sit and examine why.

If boilerplate is somehow prohibitively uncomfortable to write, that's a pain signal here to tell you something. You're missing an abstraction! Just like touching a hot stove should signal you to not do the thing. Choosing to just do the boilerplate faster with stolen training data, even if it's a task the bot can easily do correctly, is like shooting up morphine instead of moving your hand off the stove. And nearly all LLM apologia is like this!

If nothing else, I have a far more fundamental respect for friction* and pain signals than I did five years ago.

@davidgerard

Anyway: The worst thing an organization's leaders tolerate is what that organization becomes, and the blast radius of a single toxic contributor is huge and largely invisible. For everyone who speaks up to say this behavior isn't acceptable, there are dozens or hundreds of smart, competent people who peer into your community, see that this is how you live and move along without your ever knowing they exist, on their way to a better life somewhere else.

We don't have to live like this.

Thinking about switching to #NetBSD to avoid #Linux #AI tainted kernel, and the thing that is worrying me most is package managers. I've been using #Debian and derivatives for about twenty years mainly because of its excellent package manager. Is there anything which does similar dependency tracking in the #BSD world?

If you love a #hardware hacker, make sure they have a signal analyzer. And/or an #oscilloscope.

This message is running on repeat in my head.

@arclight
AWK is a powerful and surprisingly underappreciated tool for this kind of thing. Also it's already available everywhere, and has stayed compatible across decades. We don't always need to reinvent the wheel.

Might have to start calling myself an artisanal engineer.

New entry suggestion for the Hacker's Dictionary:
linuxlop - (noun) an operating system hallucinated by a Large Language Model.

Sorry, no more time to explain. Urgently need to study NetBSD configuration.

Might have to update my CV title to Artisanal Software Developer to distinguish myself from slop pseudo "programmers".

We'll have to do "AI" rehab for folks once this hype is over. I'm not even kidding.

Men understand consent.

If you agree to a boxing match and your opponent continues to hit you after the bell, that's assault.

If you agree to a boxing match and your opponent suddenly whips out a gun, that's assault.

If you agree to a boxing match and your opponent and six of his buddies all climb in the ring together, that's assault.

If you agree to a boxing match and your opponent drugs you and hits you after you pass out, that's assault.

So let's stop pretending like men have no idea where the line is between consent and assault. They know. They just don't care.
