Ok, looks like this is the week of funny experiences.

Customer: "I had an AI check our server and it says the SSH port is open and that's not very secure."

Me: "Yes, you asked us to open it so you could access the server via SFTP (actually, you wanted FTP, but we discussed it a bit and found this compromise). Don't worry, it's only accessible from your IP and you land in a dedicated FreeBSD jail. From there, you can only access the 'exchange' directory on your server, where you can upload and download files without affecting the application."

(NB: I had suggested a VPN, but they declined because it was too complicated.)

Customer: "Yes, but maybe it's still insecure. Can't we close it?"

Me: "No, unless you want to lose access to that directory."

Customer: "Ok, thanks."

One hour later:

Customer: "Hi, I think we've found a solution. We've just created an app (!!!) with AI that lets us access the files anyway, but more securely than SSH (!!!). Can we install that and close SSH? Oh, and not in the dedicated jail, but directly in the application's jail, because it needs access to the application's files."

Me: "Frankly, I trust SSH in a dedicated jail, restricted by the firewall, a lot more. I don't think this is a good idea."

Customer: "Ok, thanks."

Half an hour later:

Customer: "Ok, now it's secure. I had another AI check it and it found some security issues, but it fixed them all. Can you install it and disable SSH?"

Me: "I strongly advise against it. I can see problems coming."

Customer: "Ok, thanks."

One hour later, my phone rings.

Their internal IT guy (who has access to the machine, which, after all, belongs to them) had given the AI the login credentials to go ahead with the operation.

Except the AI had managed to lock itself out via the firewall, without even starting the app. And now they couldn't get back in.

Fortunately, I had my own access, via VPN, to a separate jail that the AI hadn't touched (or even considered).

Customer: "SORRYSORRYSORRYSORRYSORRY! From now on, we do things your way."

Well, at least it ended well.

PS: The customer knows I'm sharing this story and agreed to it.

if you watch the new Harry Potter show you tell WB to keep making more Potter stuff

and you show them that directly funding JKR’s transphobia, that she LITERALLY uses to strip trans women’s rights away, is not a dealbreaker

how could i ever feel safe around someone who buys her the boots she uses to step on my neck?

Time poverty is one of capitalism’s least discussed forms of deprivation.

When a person has no hours in a day to see friends, to recover, and to relax life becomes something squeezed around work.

Hey, when you copy your UTM folder to a backup drive, and then wipe your drive, did you know that by default your virtual drive files aren’t in the actual UTM folder?

Yep, I know now…

I have no idea why I really really wants it, but I do wants it, I do

For no good reason it occured to me that there must be Soviet era Hi-Fi around somewhere, and yes, there is, and now I think I better put a block on my credit card

This sculpture is at the National Museum of Science and Nature in Ueno Park, Tokyo. I really, really like this sculpture and I am so satisfied with this picture. I don't know anything about it but overall (see earlier post) there are really nice brutalist... things... here.

cat on the windowsill
while i stand at the window
watching the moon and antares
move across a darkening sky

from the kitchen behind me
the noise of a pan
a soft light blinks on
out in the distance

this is enough.

You know, it's funny. 20 years ago I started photographing abandoned buildings, as I believed they were a warning sign that America was sliding off the face of a cliff. Years later, that's pretty obvious to just about everyone that we're in freefall. Not really sure what the point of a warning is any more but I still have photos so what the hell, why not post them.

My biggest fear is that I'll have the exact same typo in both new password fields. My second biggest fear is ghosts but I can handle them as long as I remember my password.

Fun story: When I was traveling home I wore my "Watch Herzog" t-shirt for travel day. It's got a giant picture of Werner's face on it.

This fucked up every single facial recognition program both the Mexican and US passport control areas to the point that agents for both countries had to pull me aside and verify my identity the old fashioned way.

So t-shirts with big faces on them don't work well with AI Facial recognition systems. Figured that would be interesting information around here.

Hey, nerds... Epic is making Anti-Cheat compatible with Linux.

Now, don't get weird about thisOops too late.

@SRAZKVT “Ok, vroomer” sounds like a perfect retort to any car-brained person opposing bike lanes, sidewalks, public transit, etc.

Hey so uhhh

Would you happen to have a thing called the "NVidia App" installed on your computer?

If so, you might want to open it up, go to Settings, and uncheck "Allow AI Agents to Control NVidia App". This checkbox will be on by default if you have not specifically turned it off.

Your timeline doesn’t need a cleanse. Trying to cleanse it will only disrupt its natural balance of healthy bacteria and pH

Australia’s High Court has ruled that the climate impact of coal burned overseas needs to be considered. In a landmark decision earlier this week the court ruled that the approval of a massive coalmine expansion in the Hunter Valley was invalid, because planners never considered the emissions from the coal that would be burned abroad. Retired science teacher Wendy Wales and her small local group fought the case for more than four years. What's the mood today? What would you describe yourself to be doing?

It's not #ICACRadio, but there is going to be some good shit on the Joint Standing Committee on Eletoral Matters Inquiry into the 2025 Election stream today.

I am a highly experienced software engineer with over 20 years of experience. I've done everything from kernel development to web development and I'm fluent in tens of programming languages and build tools. I am good at just making things better and I come highly recommended by some fedizens.

I urgently need work. Happy to do most things programming, sysadmining or devopsing. I'm located in Europe in the Netherlands, but happy to remote to anywhere. #GetFediHired
