[Analysis] Netanyahu is trying to void an election he lost.
Thursday morning a Shin Bet leak landed at 9am: Qatar had allegedly sent tens of millions of shekels to Arab parties. Whoever handed it over gave it to diplomatic reporters, not the crime or security desks. Channel 14 went into special broadcast mode, called it "the terror of the ballot boxes", and its panelists wanted the election cancelled.
What's important really is what the #Likud actually asked for. It was not an investigation. It demanded the Knesset Speaker vote be frozen immediately, because the opposition, Arab factions included, looks likely to have the votes to replace Amir Ohana.
[...] "The purpose of the stunt is transparent, and even openly declared. Likud is not focused on investigating the suspicions raised by Shin Bet chief David Zini, but on their political consequences. The faction demanded today, immediately, to suspend because of the investigation the voting process on appointing the Knesset Speaker. The explanation is simple: the opposition, including the Arab factions, seems to have a solid majority to replace the current Speaker, Amir Ohana of Likud, as a first step toward legislation that would begin to reverse the legal reality set by the judicial overhaul laws of the previous term. Netanyahu and his partners are determined to thwart this."
The story has been shrinking ever since. By evening the figure was hundreds of thousands of shekels, not tens of millions. The Justice Ministry had known about preliminary suspicions since the end of last week and called them limited. Zini himself had said on election day that the voting was clean. So if he really believed a foreign state was meddling. Why sit on it until the ballots were counted? Because Netanyahu lost.
