Apparently, both candidates in the Texas Senate race just need 1 Bitcoin from me to win... I wonder how many people fall for that scam.

Unfortunately, the data center's location isn't enough to keep you in control of the IT you paid for.

If there is one good thing about AI proliferation attacking education and the creative industry, it's that we're starting to question what the truly important part of many activities is.

Free Software Friday! After the security incident earlier this week, I want to give a shout-out to all Open Source maintainers, especially the people behind PHP. Keeping software alive isn't easy, especially under pressure.

The wars in Ukraine and Iran have shown us how dependent our modern world has become on IT. Now, imagine what would happen if big tech companies restricted access to their services at the push of a virtual button.

The "AI enhancements" in many proprietary ed tech products only serve as a vehicle to increase dependence on those products and lock up students' data. It's time to look at alternatives, instead of continuing with business as usual.

Does everything belong in the cloud?
Cloud repatriation is about more than cutting costs. It's about control, resilience, and the freedom to leave.
My latest article challenges the cloud-first mindset and asks what should replace it.

Big AI companies are fighting hard to keep their energy consumption a secret. Yet, we thankfully have Open Source tools that start to estimate their climate impact.

So up to 31% of all incoming pull requests are pointless AI slop. At what point does the time spent managing this cancel out any hypothetical gains from AI coding tools?

Nothing about Microsoft's posturing would help you if the US decides to sanction you or subpoena your emails from Microsoft. In the end, unless you can choose your provider, all the changes they make are just smoke, mirrors, and a lot of marketing.

Wasn't the promise that AI would find and fix critical security bugs, like now in PHP, before they become an issue for humans?

Whenever I hear complaints about how fake news influences elections, I wonder why we don't do more to teach people how to spot it. It's all nice to complain about Meta, but even if they were to play nice, foreign state actors won't follow the rules.

A tiny part of me is curious: what would happen if the US sanctioned the entire EU, including businesses, and cut them off from the cloud? I'm sure it would make any past global financial crisis look like child's play.

It feels strange that AI proponents seem to think our culture would have been better if we replaced musicians, artists, and authors with AI. Maybe it's just the result of a society where art and culture have outpriced 90% of the population.

Linus Torvalds shows that leadership is a different skill set than technical development. Maybe it's time for us as the Open Source community to recognize that and start splitting community and technical leadership roles.
