‘As I write this, the Washington Post has published at least four articles about Obama’s “Cheesecake Factory” line, and zero articles about a new allegation of rape against Donald Trump, who has already been found liable for sexual assault.’

What is the last reliable, no-slop version of LibreOffice (meaning not just AI features but also 'AI-assisted code'), and where can one (i.e., me) download it (presumably from a mirror site)? I.e., has anyone gone through GitHub and established which was the last version before LO started accepting contributor use of AI?

Serious inquiry, looking for helpful replies not venting or snark, thank you.

Anthropic’s SEC filing is amazing. It describes itself as the most important company in human history, then if you keep reading it’s like

Being the "critical friend" to organizations doing work that is meant to be in the public interest, but that mostly unthinkingly buys into a belief in the inevitability of corporate GenAI, is much more tiring than it was even a couple years ago. It feels like many decision-makers have (with varying degrees of enthusiasm) given up on the idea that they have a real choice. [4/4]

Whether you call it “ripping” or “remixing”, the BBS scene had a long tradition of adapting and reusing earlier ANSI art.

My latest deep dive traces the origins of several logon screens from "Fire Escape's BBS Directory HQ" in St. Louis, Missouri, and explores how Fire Escape and others transformed the original images. Some of them get kinda surreal.

Rewatching Trek VI, and the themes were originally inspired by moving beyond the Cold War, as the Iron Curtain crumbled, but striking me as still relevant today: some cynically manipulate events to engineer war for their own ends, our heroes fight their own prejudices to struggle for peace.

I absolutely love the incredible work of Abandoned America @AbandonedAmerica but his work on the 'aircraft graveyard' at the AMARG: Davis-Monthan Air Force Base in Tucson, AZ is just... *something else*.

Breathtaking.

My heart is heavy. Walter Koenig, our Ensign Pavel Chekov, passed away early today.

Walter and I met on the bridge of the Enterprise in the 1960s, and we stayed friends for nearly six decades. When Brad and I married in 2008, Walter stood beside us as our best man. Just last month, on Sept. 14, he turned 90, on the same day Brad and I celebrated our 18th wedding anniversary. I will always treasure that he and I shared that date.

Walter was more than Chekov. He was a writer, a teacher, a thoughtful man, and a loyal friend. To the fans who loved him for so many years, thank you. He loved you too.

Rest well, my dear friend. Keep navigating a steady course.

The US lost around 3,000 lives on Sept 11, 2001, and since then US voters have persistently allowed themselves to be swayed at the polls by racist and islamophobic garbage thrown by politicians. A virus killed over a million, and people raw dog the air and don’t get vaccinated. Twenty years of war killed more Americans than 9/11, but we’re back at it. Gun violence by white people in 1 year kills more.

Americans are idiots.

i have never understood why academia normalized populism as a synonym for fascism, when all so-called populisms are ran by elites from the capitalist class, either hiding behind a band of military generals or as a flat-out corruptocracy with access to unspeakable violence.

i know of no so-called populisms that were bourne from grassroots, majorities. so please, stop implying #fascism is popular with demographic majorities by calling it #populism. has never been the case.

I am tired of watching (and dealing with the fallout of) progressives/the center left/"liberals" across the west giving up on the idea of universal human rights and instead fighting to throw people to the fascists to save their own skin.

It never works. Fight where you stand or die where you kneel.

Great work people. Thank you for not leaving it up to GNU to decide the fate of emacs.

I work for the French Social Security. It's one of the few prides I have in life.
For the last 20 years, budget cuts have stripped this beautiful institution to a witch hunt for poor people.

Today my brother went to the ER for sharp stomach aches, 2 years after my dad died of a burst stomach. He waited the whole day but he finally was treated. For free, without question about his insurance.

I believe in the public hospital. In benefits. In public education.
That's why I support today's protests for another direction, for a more humane budget.

Adding one more thing here: We did a survey experiment in May 2025 that showed that when people heard more about ICE overreach, they moved against the president on deportations. Then the news coverage of the Kilmar Abrego Garcia story verified this finding www.gelliottmorris.com/p/kilmar-abr...

I wouldn't choose to work in PHP as a language and I have never particularly enjoyed it but I do think we are living in really tough times to be maintaining *any* essential software infrastructure, so thanks to the PHP team for putting in the work RN
