Cursed US coins of old:

2.5¢ : twinney, pronounced to rhyme with "penny" : also the size and shape of 2.5 pennies (no, not like that)
69¢ : nice : shaped very similar to this: ☯
$3.14 : a circle : square shaped

To be clear: it is perfectly fine to have standards and red lines. But if your red line includes "I will not associate with any person who has ever voted for an imperfect-but-generally-harmless politician", that is a bit too far

I guess what I am getting at: embrace the imperfections that make us human. Do not stop enjoying good-but-imperfect coffee because one time you experienced a perfect cup

I think there is a larger, very human, problem going on where anything less than perfection is a failure. And, I apply this to myself: I tend to be a perfectionist. I want everything I touch to be perfect if possible

But this becomes a real issue when turned outward. Every politician must be perfect their entire life, or they should not get my vote. Among some communities: any member who even thinks about "the other side" gets banished

I really like ternary voting scales. I talked a little yesterday about my scale for coffee beans: bad beans, imperfect beans, and perfect beans

My standard scale for ranking is similar: bad, good, great

To be clear, even a "good" rating is a pass. I will go to a good restaurant. I will play a good game. My little truck is a good truck. These are not perfect, but they are completely acceptable

Unfortunately, all scales are now treated as: 100% is pass, and anything less than 100% is a fail

Imperfect beans are the most fun, because they will make an excellent cup of coffee with one or more brew methods, but not every brew method

The majority of coffee beans I buy tend to be imperfect beans. I have gotten to where I can typically make a decent cup by the third try, and an excellent cup before I run out

Why I enjoy imperfect beans: they tend to have interesting flavors that do not work with some brewing methods, but are a unique experience when made with a compatible method

Coffee theory: once coffee is roasted, there are only 3 types of beans: perfect beans, imperfect beans, and bad beans

Bad beans are just bad. No matter how you brew bad beans, they will always make bad coffee

Perfect beans work in all brewers, with the right recipe. Pour over, espresso, automatic, immersion, etc: a skilled person can make great coffee, given enough tests
