Every time I review applications I think: "Wow, people have really beautifully formatted CVs, I should really redo mine!", but then I can never justify spending time on this and always end up sending an updated version of my was-ever-will-always-be-ugly CV. I can only hope that the people reading my applications understand that this means that I am busy with more important things to do than prettifying CVs!

Un site pour alerter sur la précarité à l'université. 170 000 vacataires (dont moi) assurent un quart des cours à la fac, pour un salaire inférieur au SMIC, versé des mois après. On n'en peut plus.
Lisez, partagez, témoignez.

I'm fascinated by the rapidity and depth of deskilling that comes from chatbot use. Today's example: say three things about your own child.
"Small, human, um, help me out here, chatbot, I'm drawing a blank."
It's sold in the language of feminism, of labour-saving technology for emotional labour, but it's really big tech spotting an untapped market (women) and encouraging you to outsource the last of your humanity for a monthly fee as your brain turns to paste.

I'm looking forward to introducing my B.A. French and Spanish students to collocations and hoping that guessing the common collocate will prove to be a fun game tomorrow! 🤓
💡 If you looked at the last data analysis you conducted: Would you be able to retrace every step of your data processing to come back to the same results?
👥 We are excited to share that OSC members @susanneadler , @drfollowmario , Frauke Kreuter, Marko Sarstedt, @nicebread & @stfeuerriegel co-authored an article which was recently published in @Nature Human Behaviour, highlighting how computational reproducibility is crucial for the credibility of science. Computational reproductions can discover errors early on and prevent further spreading of computational errors into other papers and theoretical consensus. This secures the quality and efficiency of research and promotes trust in the scientific process and community.
❔ What can we do?
In the article, the authors list a number of recommendations for reproducible workflows, such as making data, code and documentation accessible and readable using the following method in research routines.
S -Script the full analysis
E - Encapsulate the environment
E - Explain code + data
D - Deposit materials persistently

Happy #MondayMorning everyone! I‘ve been working since 5:30 am (thanks to light-saving time), have written up a limitations and conclusion section, reworked an abstract, written e-mails, and returned article proofs so now it’s time for a musical break! 🎶🎵
#SORTEE2026 Conference is over but you can (re)watch the two plenary sessions by Dr. Lauren Cadwallader and Dr. Tatsuya Amano, as well as the introductory & concluding remarks by SORTEE’s president, Maria Purgar:
Today I am visiting friends who have recently moved into a hew home. Following the tradition of „Brot und Salz, Gott erhalt’s“, I've attempted to bake a filled tear-and-share bread (inspired by the recipe above). The photo shows how I would like to present it to them with a truffle-infused salt in the middle. In practice, it's an hour cycling trip to get there so we shall see what it looks like on arrival...
For the bakers out there: I did the first proof overnight in the fridge which seemed to work really well, but I did not fill them until this morning before the second proof. Thanks everyone for your tips! Also, my fillings are based on what I had in stock: gouda cheese and chill, walnut, feta cheese with herbes de Provence, plus some plain ones with just sesame on top. I guess I probably overproved everything, but hopefully they'll still taste good. Also, I always think that egg wash is a waste of egg and I absolutely hate it when the crust has a sightliest taste of burnt omelette, but here it probably would have improved the finish.
Any baking experts out here? Can I make the dough for this (https://thegreatbritishbakeoff.co.uk/recipes/all/sura-tear-and-share-tomato-olive-and-garlic-rolls/) this evening, do the first proof in the fridge overnight, and then the shaping, second proof and baking tomorrow morning?
Also, it honestly felt a shame to be removing all these spiders and spider webs just one week before the club's special Halloween party! 🕷️ 🕸️
The dance club that I am a member of had its autumn clean-up today and it's really nice to see a group of volunteers coming together to clean, tidy, repair, etc. It was my first time and everyone seemed to have some special skills that they could contribute from climbing high ladders to gardening and fixing electrical faults. I didn't think I had any special skills so I volunteered to clean the windows, but then it turned out that I do have a special skill: I am not scared of even the largest or hairiest of spiders! So I got promoted to spider removal expert! I am pleased to report that all the spiders have been safely relocated (though I honestly expect that many will find their way into the ballroom in no time!).
At a local supermarket this morning, I was rather surprised to see an employee in the diary aisle getting help from – what I assume was – their ca. 6-year-old daughter. The child honestly seemed to be having a rather good time, but I'm not sure that social services or labour inspectors would have been taken lightly to such a young person sat on the supermarket floor in leggings and welly boots using a machine to put 30%-off stickers on yogurts...

I missed @brembs's keynote on "Replacing academic journals", but I am looking forward to watching the recording at some point this weekend: https://www.lib4ri.ch/previous-event-materials#oaw26_brembs.

As someone who appreciates the commons-based peer production environments of academia and freely licensed open source software, some version of this line has been on my mind constantly for the past few years:
> Virtually every commons-based peer production process mentioned above is currently facing the equivalent of a distributed denial-of-service (DDOS) attack on its integration processes.
