    Attention please! (Clears his throat).

Seeing that the Pixelfed.social server was receiving spam and scam accounts, I decided to switch server. Imagine my surprise when I discovered... I couldn't. You can't migrate a Pixelfed.social profile to another instance. Apparently, this has been the case for over a year, by other complaints I've seen.

The lead developer has said something like they're working on fixing it, but it's been like this for a while...

I asked @pixelfed for an explanation several days ago. They've posted things, but they haven't answered to me.

Meanwhile, they've disabled one of the main features of the Fediverse on the largest (and "official") #Pixelfed server.

In other words, they're holding all their users hostage, which goes against the philosophy of the #Fediverse.

What's more, Pixelfed has a function to export your data. However, exporting posts always fails.

I thought, well, at least I can import the people I follow. Nope, because the only import tool they've designed is one for importing your Instagram account. Disabled on the main Pixelfed.social server, by the way.

I even started to think it was because they were one version behind the server I wanted to move to (which would be strange, since it's the main server).

Well, no, they have the same version. But you can only migrate your account INTO Pixelfed.social, not the other way, OUT of Pixelfed.social. That makes the whole thing crystal clear to me.

In short: NEVER create an account on Pixelfed.social, or you'll be held hostage. I recommend another servers (Luzeed, Fotolibre, for example). And there's also @vernissage for sharing photos.

You can all follow me again at this account: @andrewblasco@luzeed.org. Because of course, without account migration, you lose all your followers 🤷🏽‍♂️

The "funniest" thing about all this is the main @pixelfed developer raised approximately 138,742 Canadian dollars (around €86,000) in March 2025:

    kickstarter.com/projects/pixel

This was much more than the initial goal of 50,000 CAD (€31,000). Among the things promised with the funds raised were:

    - A new website design, for which they even shared concept art.

    - Accelerating Pixelfed's development across the web, iOS, and Android.

    - Improving moderation and security across the platforms (Pixelfed, Loops, and Sup).

A year and a half later, none of this has happened. And this disappoints me greatly, because I was one of those who donated to this Kickstarter.

I don't know if this developer realizes the damage he's doing to free software by raising thousands of euros and then not even offering any explanations about his projects. Just that: answer and provide explanations.

Instead, he prefers to block anyone who asks questions, who says, "Hey, this is stalled"...

I see so much burned people about #Pixelfed developement... I'm not a developer, but I'm beginning to think some people could start a new project, a fork.

Or maybe help Vernissage to improve and just eclipse Pixelfed 🤔

    Just a thought :blobcatPraise:

On the positive side, you're not losing much when switching to different software. I mean… even Mastodon is better at uploading/tagging images than Pixelfed. IDK what they think their use case might be.

@dat They had a sweet spots back then. Like ... finding pictures by location. Setting particular licenses per images. The portfolio. Or that history / on that day feature. But for one, quite some of these have been axed and just quietly removed at some point, and then again: What do advanced features help if basic features are broken and even worse if the maintainer and administrator of the *cough* flagship instance responds to anything even loosely resembling criticism by blocking people? My opinion is as unimportant as any other but this is ... some of the worst, some of the most anti-social behaviours I have so far experienced both in the Fediverse and in the FLOSS community as a whole.

I completely agree with you. I've never seen behaviour like that from a dev in the Fediverse before. I don't care devs having a big ego when they produce great work, but I can't understand the way he treats people and his own platform with so much flaws. He boasts so much about it, yet he allows serious problems to persist that are bad for his own, Pixelfed and Fediverse's reputation, since Pixelfed is the entry point for many people to the Fedi.

Many people have already complained about not being able to contribute, he does not care. So far, only one fork of Pixelfed has been created (Pixelfed Glitch), but it's not clear how it benefits users...

@hiphopheaven Signed up for the platform in 2018 I think. Had a few hundreds of contacts, a few hundreds of pictures on there. Somehow got into dansups way at some point, which resulted in his as well as the pixelfed account blocking me back then. Used to post one last picture on pixelfed stating that I am not using the account anymore for these reasons, not particularly rude in words - which resulted in my whole account being gone like ten minutes later. None of the pixelfed folks responded on the Fediverse, however dansup on Bluesky claimed I deleted my account by myself and now am starting to blame him and stated he has logfiles to prove that. Well what do you know. Remembering this, I am still close to being enraged because of losing all the pictures and the memories linked to them back then, even though knowing no one on the Fediverse owes anyone anything but it did for sure teach me a lesson about using pixelfed.social or anything related to it.

Oh no! Did he delete your account from his instance just because you criticised him? Honestly, that's even worse than him blocking your account on his personal account. Disagreeing with an instance admin isn't listed as a reason for deletion in his server rules. 😶
It's also against GDPR and many similar laws - every citizen has the right to obtain a copy of their data, but he deleted your accounts and photos arbitrarily. 🥺

@veroandi I don't know what exactly happened and there's hardly a chance of proving anything. I have no other explanation than him or someone administering pixelfed.social deleting my account, like, 10..15mins after my last post there. And ... I was extremely disappointed as well as confused by that, still am when thinking about it (also about losing all the images, the thoughts, the scarce conversations on it). It's a rabbit hole of thoughts and topics but I guess, mainly, it, for me, boils down to two learnings. First one being: Specifically on the Fediverse where most of the systems are driven by single individuals, it's very much about having a relationship of trust to this person, and dansup, put as neutrally as somewhat possible, has proven over and over again that he is in no way whatsoever trustworthy so the only conclusion here is to just stay miles at least from anything he is in administrative or moderation charge of. Like, not generally staying away from pixelfed or loops but staying away from those instances of these software he runs. The other one, unfortunately, is ... talking migration, lock-in and vote-with-your-feet and I ... still see the Fediverse has a lot of room for improvements here, most likely also a lot of need for that. Pixelfed does a particularly poor job when it comes to this, but all other platforms are just slightly better. Guess for now best to do is be very careful which instance to pick and where to stay, and pray that it will not go away or turn bad anytime soon (or be blocked by others). And have a fallback plan, a backup, or an external source of data in place to prevent that kind of things from being bad once they show up. It's really really disheartening on closer look, and it leaves open more questions than it answers. 😬

@andrewblasco @pixelfed @vernissage @andrewblasco You can try to use Posty to convert your Pixelfed archive into a Mastodon-compatible one.

    https://posty.1sland.social/pixelfed

One of the biggest issues with the Pixelfed archive is that it contains none of your images at all.  You actually need to convert it to a Mastodon archive with Posty just to include the actual images (instead of links to the images).

    https://writer.oliphant.social/oliphant/posty-for-pixelfed-what-fresh-hell

Edit: Note you can also use Slurp! https://codeberg.org/vyr/slurp#importing-a-pixelfed-archive

@argv_minus_one @andrewblasco @vernissage @andrewblasco Yes, once you have it, you can via Slurp. That can migrate you to GoToSocial, which lets you import backdated posts and even has a 'gallery' mode.

You can also turn it into a static HTML archive with Posty a little app I created.

I did it here, although my Pixelfed is definitely a test account and hardly has the volume a real production user would.

@maxoakland That's not really my own aim, but I appreciate your position. That complexity only exists because of a need to workaround Pixelfed's implementation. Both Slurp and Posty have to actually handle downloading the images from Pixelfed, because it's not included in the export.

Yup, and I fully recognize that *so very much* of the fediverse is a giant volunteer project, but I also think the OP has a fair point in wondering when “eventually” might be. Point being that if it’s too far in the future, it’s meaningless to the people using it right *now*.

This is true, but OP could also have not assumed the worst of "Pixelfed".

Unfortunately the state of our world encourages this distrust. Dan has owned (some/all?) of his conflicts as far as I've seen and is only human, has grown immensely, and is amazingly generous with his volunteer efforts (i.e. not his day job).
