    You don't get to run for president without billions of dollars at your disposal and party apparatchiks vouching for you on TV every day for months on end, informing the VBNMW people who to support.

    This idea the party leadership and donor class preferences don't matter is painfully naive. Both major US parties are captured by capital and white supremacist elements. That's why they ignore what voters want and insist you work for them instead of the other way around.

    Both parties want a big tech financial bubble because that's how they and their friends get rich. They both want to humiliate Iran on behalf of Israel and American jingoism. They both want fossil fuels to continue, maybe at different rates. They both want to be immunized from corruption and crimes in office. They both want to keep US officials out of the Hague. They both want ludicrous police and military budgets.

    We're really fucking up against it in this country.

    Politicians like El-Sayed and Mamdani are really bog standard liberal retail politicians. Old school even! But the Democratic Party spent months trying to undermine them and promote centrist-conservative alternatives who align better with their goals. And yeah, sometimes they lose, obviously. But sometimes they get guys like Talarico or Turek who don't really stand for anything, who will fall in line with what they want.

    Democrats have been prepping Gavin Newsom for a presidential run for the past two years. He's their guy. But sure, any random progressive can bop into the contest and unseat him. It could happen! There's bound to be an Obama level candidate waiting in the wings, although Obama was already a known quantity by this point. We didn't get Biden and Clinton because people loved them. They were just "inevitable" in the Thanos sense.

    @gwynnion I don’t think he has the juice: too milquetoast for the moment, without convictions or any natural constituency outside of generic Democrat.
