So, we got a piano about a year ago. We got a decent electric one (a Kawaii). Reasons:

    * We live in a japanese apartment. An acoustic piano would be heard through the walls and windows. You can dampen it with mats and wall covers, but it sits in the living room and it would look pretty bad.

    * We live in Okinawa. 80-100% humidity is the norm. Forget about letting in fresh air and keep the piano healthy and in tune at the same time. Would have to use AC 24/7.

…which is what I do from roughly May through mid-Sep in Minnesota.

If we had a separate room to keep the piano and other instruments it'd be doable. But the living room has to be comfortable and pleasant for us, not for our things.

Also, with the instrument right where we usually are we're much more likely to sit down and play around with it than if we had to go in a different room and sit alone.

As you say, the feel is very different. Our piano school has a Yamaha concert grand piano and it's remarkable how much better it feels.

But the electric one still feels and sounds like a piano. It's very enjoyable to play and perfectly fine to practice on, messing about with and just generally having fun. And with earphones my wife can practice late at night without waking anybody.

Don't think you *must* have a real piano in order to enjoy it.
