I'm searching for a backup to external HDD solution that works on Mac, is not Time Machine, and allows me to backup the files to the external HDD in a way that I can mount the disk on other systems, e.g. running windows or linux, and have access to all these files, too? Any hints?
@michaelvitz I am a fan of rsync.net. I use it for my backup and I like it because when it comes to restoring, I understand what's on the other side: a zfs file system that I can access with rsync. No magic, no nasty surprises.
