Modern PHP looks nothing like Perl, has strong typing, the best package manager of any language (seriously), and much, much more.

Hah. By that criterion, modern Perl looks nothing like Perl either.

Also, what good is the best package manager if your language doesn't have modules? And if you accidentally leave an empty line or a space at the beginning of any PHP source file anywhere, your whole application breaks?

Ever tried leaving white space before the #! ?

Also, going to "etc" after listing two things is very "my dog ate my homework"

@EndlessMason #! is only relevant for executable unix scripts, of which my web applications have ... none. (Maybe you're still using CGI, but even then I'd expect the main script to be tiny and all relevant code to live in modules.)

    What "etc"?

Maybe one? Your perl daemon likely has one in script/do-web-server or in you app server, but point taken
