Recently we celebrated National Poetry Day in the UK. The theme was ‘wonder’.

    ‘A Warning To My Readers’
    by Wendell Berry

    Do not think me gentle
    because I speak in praise
    of gentleness, or elegant
    because I honour the grace
that keeps this world. I am
    a man crude as any,
    gross of speech, intolerant,
    stubborn, angry, full
of fits and furies. That I
    may have spoken well
    at times, is not natural.
A wonder is what it is.

This landscape picture is now the wallpaper on my ‘phone. It is roughly broken up into horizontal stripes. I can count at least a dozen. At the top a darker sky with more ominous clouds going down through the layers of distance to the palest azure and light fluffy billows towards the south and the horizon. Then come the Red Cuillins and the sunlit land of Ullinish. The light ultramarine of the waters of the Western Fjord nears next. We’re about two-thirds of the way down and the rest of the image is taken up with about five levels of the moorland landscape of Harlosh in the foreground. The colours here are a range of tawny browns and raw grassy greens. I’m not immune to the wonder of it all.
