for those who don’t know, an early version of dan & kathe spracklen’s sargon chess engine was distributed as a book of z80 assembler code. this included routines for a graphic board. the whole thing is well-documented. the sargon engine lived an interesting life that i’d love to really do a deep dive on at some point. apologies for the internet archive screenshots; i’m not with my copy of the book.

the cover of ‘sargon: a computer chess program’ by dan and kathe spracklen. the background is a deep red chess board, and aside from the text, there are one-bit simple sprites of chess pieces.
a page from the book showing the king’s piece sprite and explaining how the sprites are rendered.
a page from the book explaining the board setup routine in a comment and then beginning the listing of the routine in z80 assembler.
