Simon 🇳🇿🐮firesphere@autistics.lifeOct 11, 2026, 8:08 AM@randahl Didn't Zelensky himself say he would like to, but that literally the democratically established law of Ukraine forbids elections during wartime? Or, maybe someone around him?
I vaguely recall such a thing, but I'm not sure from where.
cris_halecris_hale@mastodon.socialOct 11, 2026, 10:16 AM@firesphere I'm glad you said because I was going to say, Trump etc. might be self-serving a-holes, but arguing in favour of democratic norms is valid. But, you were right: https://www.rnbo.gov.ua/en/Diialnist/6342.html

@randahl @firesphereYes. During WW2 the continental United States was not under daily attack designed to disrupt civilian life. In contrast the UK, which was with nightly bombing, suspended elections. Indeed had an unelected PM. He made the Leader of the Opposition deputy Prime Minister in a coalition to unite the nation against an existentialist threat.
It's probably even worse in #Ukraine today. I'm sure they would be delighted to offer an election when/if Russia halts hostilities. Fighting for democracy, not inviting democratic disruption is what we should be supporting.
