Anyone with open commissions who wants to do some #art for NetBSD?
We've got a budget for paying for some concept art and can later talk about working with you on some merch. DM us!
Naturally, we cannot accept contributions using generative AI.

@netbsd Is this for a logo of sorts? If so, I can maybe connect you w/ the person who did the logo for Sentinel: https://codeberg.org/cr1901/sentinel/src/branch/main/doc/Transparent.png
@cr1901 We're looking for something a bit cuter.
@netbsd What kind of things do you need?
@jack Cute mascot work, mostly.
@netbsd think bigger. NetBSD is mostly known for its portability. I very well remember the old black and white logo with a lot of different crts, keyboards and mice, on top a group of little devils holding the NetBSD-flag on a trident. You don't need one mascot, you need a little family of mascots. Not so many like pokemon, smurfs or minions, but at least five somethings, that resemble evolved little devils or so - holding together the flag.
@netbsd After thinking about this for a bit, my best concept is a cute little orange hermit crab that can be drawn with different “shells”, where each shell is the case from some sort of hardware. This captures NetBSD’s “can run on anything” philosophy of portability and gives you a nice way to specialize the mascot for different working groups in the community. To be a little cheeky/use the lore, the default shell could be a toaster 😊
@netbsd Here's some of my art, including a mascot for a (long defunct) Linux distro I did over a decade ago!
@netbsd@mastodon.sdf.org @karpour@mstdn.social wait you did the chillhop music trash panda? I wasn't aware it was you, nice! :neocat_aww:
@garfieldairlines I did not design the character, but I worked at Chillhop as a developer for 4 years, though, and also did some art for them.
@skybert thank you!
@netbsd Maybe @Fuchskind can do this ^^
@netbsd @Fuchskind @hobo_ahoi also /cc @Fuchskind because dot art blocks most of the Fediverse
@netbsd I wish you good luck finding an artist to make your artworks, and I salute your no AI policy for it! 🧡
Here is a little watercolor sketch freely inspired by your logo.
@davidrevoy What's the scooter for? What's your power level?
@citadel9 Hehe, I just wanted a "tech" detail, showing she was using a digital object 😊
@davidrevoy @citadel9 “Of course it runs NetBSD!”
@davidrevoy omg she's got a scouter 🥺
@davidrevoy @netbsd
You were the furst that popped into mind when I saw their post this morning. 😁
@davidrevoy @netbsd As I am not aware if you know about this software already. I am in the process of redoing all of my photography internet uploads with this software and thought you might be interested. It helps to protect your incredible art from being plagarized by "AI". The software is called Glaze.
https://glaze.cs.uchicago.edu/
@atraidez @netbsd Yes, well aware (unfortunately), and I'll do the short version: it is a AI bro scam, boosted by a large (and successful) marketing effort. It was defeated on day 1, and now remain with a user base like a cult, especially appreciated from non technical user who are ready to believe in it because it sounds like the only "tech" option. But it doesn't work.
That's sad, I wish something like that would work, be open-source, would run on Linux, and be done by serious peoples.
@atraidez @netbsd Sources: see Cara social network recent news, who had 12 millions of artworks scrapped three time on August by AI dataset. The 'Glaze' on a big part of them (it was a premium built-in service) changed nothing.
Computer effort, electricity for nothing. 😩 The illusion of protection. Sadly.
@davidrevoy I recently read a @clarkesworld story about this. Didn't know it might be based on actual technology.
The story: "The Animator and the Glazer" by Ju Chu, translated by S. Qiouyi Lu
Je vois puffy la mascotte de fish linux dans la palette à guache qui se trouve sur la gauche du dessin :)

@davidrevoy @netbsd Well, I for one hope this whole David Revoy / NetBSD / concept art thing works out happily for all concerned.
I am actually quite confident if you're looking for people with artistic skills then Fedi is a good bet. There are a good few on here, so there is a chance you may find someone. Many are here to get away from the world of AI generated slop that is impacting their very lives.
