One of the things I wanted for the original version of absenter.org two decades ago was the ability to have multiple photos per day. The layout/format didn’t quite work for it and I never figured it out.
With the current version, past entries are on a horizontal plane (you can use keys and swipe). I had the idea to use the vertical plane for multiple images per day (you can key, swipe, and mouse/trackpad scroll).
Still dialing things in, but a good evolution.

@beep Thanks, Ethan. It was one of those things that’s hounded me for two decades now, and modern web stuff has made it much much easier to build.

@nazhamid Honestly. Sometimes I have to just stop to marvel at all the toys we have now, especially compared to what we could do [mumbles] decades ago.

@beep Oh it’s amazing. I still love the web so much in that regard. So many things available in the browser!

@nazhamid I browsed the gallery and tried to fathom how the background color gets chosen: do you pick it manually?

@wtrmt That is manual and a holdover from the original version. I like to be very specific with it and play around with different colors from the image I want to match or contrast with.

@nazhamid your choices are very good: sometimes is an object at the edge of the frame, sometimes a spot of color in the middle of the frame. I love the way the photo and the frame complement each other.

@wtrmt There’s a good amount of perceived color: what looks to be a certain color because of others around it or whatnot, versus what the actual color is, so I often move around in the picker to find the right shade or saturation.

@nazhamid I like very much that you preserved the original aspect ratio of the images —instead of trying to display them full frame— and played with the margin's colors to complement each image.
It look timeless and understated. The grid view is also very good.
A gallery is this component that a web designer must revisit time and time again and it is so difficult to do, given all the choices.

@wtrmt The aspect ratio was very important even in the original version between 2004-2006. Two examples:

@nazhamid Why does liquid glass promise bleeding content, but then Safari just cuts off stuff? I’ve noticed it on my sites, too. It’s perplexing.

@mwichary I’ve spent many hours trying to account for safe areas and the like on both sites then gave up.
Also: that image shouldn’t be that small. What phone?

@nazhamid iPhone 17! It looks ok now – not sure why it was like this on the screenshot, and I cannot repro it.
(Yeah, and I am not sure you’re doing anything wrong with safe areas etc.! I think it’s rather impenetrable.)

@mwichary I’ve tried so many things with the safe areas and it won’t go. I was doing bunch of experiments on nazhamid.com with the grain, color, and big text to bleed off but it wouldn’t work.
