    If you're interested in giving it a go, please **please** do not use it on a books library you care about. Make a new library and add things to that!

    I'm available here, on the #rereading channel over on LiberaChat, or on Signal and/or Matrix (DM for contact).

    I expect many parts of it just don't work, but really only looking for very basic functionality here, like adding books and editing basic metadata.

    Thank you so much!

    If you're exceedingly bold, it *should* in principle work on Windows and macOS as well, but I've done literally nothing to confirm that yet. I plan on it, but it's a lot more steps so I'm starting from Linux and going from there.

    @xgranade I can give this a try, I've been wanting to build arcalibre and test run switching to it anyway.

    @xgranade hmm, when I run it, is it going to grab my existing calibre library by default and use it? ie. should I remove my existing .calibre or whatever files first

    @joshg Ah, good point.

    You *should* be able to create a file named ~/.config/arcalibre/preferences.icdl containing something like the following:

    ```
    [library]
    library_path = "/path/to/test/library"
    ```

    I can't promise that there's no bugs that will cause it to look at an existing library, though — absolutely fair to not want to try and put that at risk!

    @xgranade Hmm, trying to build on nixos, I get

     error: Cannot find Git revision 'ac62194c3917d5f474c1a844b6fd6da2db95077d' in ref '25.05' of repository 'https://github.com/NixOS/nixpkgs.git'! Please make sure that the rev exists on the ref you've specified or add allRefs = true; to fetchGit.

    when I nix-shell. Something's up with oldpkgs.

    @xgranade
    I've tried building on my Arch system and hit a compilation error in the ffmpeg.c code:

    gcc -Wall -DNDEBUG -fno-strict-aliasing -pipe -O3 -fPIC -fvisibility=hidden -pthread -fdiagnostics-color=always -I/usr/include/python3.14 '-DCALIBRE_MODINIT_FUNC= __attribute__ ((visibility ("default"))) PyObject*' -std=c99 -I/usr/include -c /home/lisa/src/arcalibre/src/calibre/utils/ffmpeg.c -o /home/lisa/src/arcalibre/build/objects/ffmpeg/ffmpeg.o
    /home/lisa/src/arcalibre/src/calibre/utils/ffmpeg.c: In function ‘open_output_file’:
    /home/lisa/src/arcalibre/src/calibre/utils/ffmpeg.c:248:42: error: ‘AVCodec’ has no member named ‘sample_fmts’
    248 | t->enc_ctx->sample_fmt = output_codec->sample_fmts[0];

    Arch only has ffmpeg 9 and ffmpeg 4 available, but I saw that the NixOS shell asks for ffmpeg 7, so i guess it is that.

    I'm too tired to do more tonight, so I'll try looking further tomorrow.

    @grimthorpe Had someone else report a different ffmpeg error, so it seems like I've got a bunch of work to do there. Thank you so much for trying that out, I really appreciate having a direction to start looking!
