The “weirdness” comes (I believe) from a reinforced understanding that such patterns in a shadow come from a manipulation of light at the object level (hole shape), whereas this manipulation of light is at the source, hence the holes being perfect circles mean that the shadow shapes don’t warp in the way we have been conditioned to expect.
