    Once again reminding you that European "yachts" are mostly not luxury vessels owned by the mega-wealthy. If they were, they'd be invulnerable to orca attacks. You think Zuck's super-yacht is being towed to shore with a broken rudder? It would plough through a pod of whales like they didn't even exist.

    What these mammals are targeting are modest, mid-sized sailing and delivery boats owned by average people, retirees or full-time cruisers.

    The orcas aren't doing class war, you fucking muppets.

    Our best hypothesis is that boat rudders sufficiently resemble dorsal fins for the orcas to use them as target practice. In other words, it's just play behaviour for young whales to fine-tune hunting skills. That's it.

    Throughout recorded history, a wild orca has never killed a human (look it up if you don't believe). They're not interested in us and don't care about our class hierarchies. Hundreds of boat attacks, zero casualties.

    Stop sharing fear-mongering memes about an endangered species.

    I'm kinda curious about the stats on this. I know the boats are mostly smaller boats but can average people really afford them in that part of the world?

    In my parts, even owning a small boat puts you far above middle class. It isn't even on the radar of anyone I know making median income. The only exception would be fishing communities but I don't personally know anyone. I'm in the great lakes area. All boat owners, no matter how small a boat, basically have to be in the top 2-3 percent of income earners.

    @chu Yes, this is precisely the cultural confusion, so I'm glad you mentioned it.

    We have a similar situation here in the UK with long boats on the canals. They're expensive, for sure, but within boating communities that's often the main family asset. It's all they have.

    Houses are also expensive, but many poor people live in houses, don't they? 🤷🏻‍♂️
