The reason it has been unimaginable is because the United States of America has a little thing called the Emoluments Clause in the Constitution.
Maybe one day, they'll figure out how to enforce it when a sitting president (who has sworn an oath to preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution of the United States), decides the Constitution can't tell him what to do.
