@wnd a good example of a nuance here is that minimal groups effects are much more likely to emerge in competition games, but if you start asking people to do worse things like directly punish other people in ways that seem less fair, most people dissent. We have many parts of social cognition that aren't just about dividing the world into categories and we're not at the mercy of this bias even though it is a real aspect of our thinking tendencies
