Listen to me, young fellow
what need is there for fish to sing
when I can roar and bellow
And the specific thing competition does to your brain, once you know about it, is hard to unsee.
We literally *stop being able to fluently access empathy* when our cognition is pointed at grouping the world into opposing sides. The more we see people as not as the complex individuals they are but as a flattened part of a rival group, the stronger these effects. The more we interpret group conflict as the stage for individual actions, the more our minds inhibit empathy.
Bite Size Economics No.13
'Economics isn't & cannot be a science'
Unlike conventional sciences, economics deals with subjects who can be & are able to change their views, values & behaviour in light of their knowledge *of* economics.
This is not to say economics cannot be rigorous or identify broad 'rules' of behaviour, it is just to remind us that even when trying to be 'objective' the values of both economists & humans shift & change due to economics itself.
NEW: The Kennedy Center is a reminder that we can win, it will be messy, and Trump will be petty.
The illegal effort to put Donald Trump's name on the Kennedy Center has always been a metaphor — but, this weekend, it became a story of how we get through this.

@wnd a good example of a nuance here is that minimal groups effects are much more likely to emerge in competition games, but if you start asking people to do worse things like directly punish other people in ways that seem less fair, most people dissent. We have many parts of social cognition that aren't just about dividing the world into categories and we're not at the mercy of this bias even though it is a real aspect of our thinking tendencies

Nieces looked at my DVD collection. Asked "What's a DVD?". Told them it was like streaming but much better. Showed them Blazing Saddles. Good time for all. Except for aggrieved text from sister later about choice of movie. Can't win them all.
My local independent journalists are offering the next two months as a “pay as you feel” trial. It’s proper meaty investigative journalism, which has got them national recognition and made positive social change.
They’re pledging to do five things, one of which is outreach into schools to tackle misinformation. Hugely important work right now. Take a look, spread the word, give it a go if you can. 💚

Every year I am stupidly late booking family holiday as the experience of booking train tickets was toooo depressing.
This year (I'm still late), a reply to my post the other day about travel sickness on swedish trains reminded me of the railfinder.eu site and honestly - it's a revelation. Doesn't cover everywhere yet, but definitely going to be using it a lot more for international rail travel in Europe.

There seems to be a pattern here. It is easier if it is 1. a direct connection and 2. local...

RIP David Hockney
David Hockney has died aged 88 (smoking until the end no doubt).
Few artists have managed to bridge the art world & popular culture so well as Hockney; his work was often both innovative *and* popular.
He will be missed, but his work will live on and be enjoyed by future generations.
I salute a truly great experimental artist.
Thinking about capacity and community-building in transport planning, it strikes me that maybe we should start thinking more about causes of friction and fragmentation. Disjoints between different government layers and departments in UK are a case in point!
