    @Edent I think the assessment in your footnote is correct (re:privacy/security), but there's also the aspect of people being very much against anything that even smells like algorithmic discovery - which "being shown posts originating in your area" sort of does, although I agree that this could be a good thing.

    A while ago, I and others toyed around with ways to use hashtags for that purpose - a bit cumbersome, but at least those already work as a discovery mechanism.

    @bocops I don't see it as any different as "see hashtags about a thing you like".
    You can choose to participate or not.
