Putting it out there in case anyone has advice: how do I fix not sleeping well due to being physically uncomfortable in bed? What kind of profession do I need to consult to sort that out?

I don't trust salespeople. If I just go to a bed shop they'll talk me into buying some garbage that won't do the job (this has happened before).

I saw a sleep physician, who told me sorry he can't help with that particular problem. Would have been nice to know that before waiting months for the appointment. He said maybe try a chiropractor, and that's not fucking happening (chiro is pseudoscience).

I'm exhausted. I've been exhausted for years. I'm fucking sick of it.

    Help.

It might help if you get specific about what parts hurt. The trying out sleeping on the floor is a good suggestion too, because it might give you additional information. You could put down some blankets for padding and it would still be very firm.

Seconding working with an OT. They are problem solvers.

@vervain in my case it's not pain, just discomfort.

I suspect I need a much softer mattress than most people, because every one I've tried has been too firm. Recently I'd been trying with a mattress topper which was kind of okay but not great (ie, I could sleep but not fantastically). I bought a $40 foam one at kmart on a whim and tried adding that as well; it felt lovely and plush, but then I felt even worse the next day. I don't know what that means. So last night I tried no topper at all, and it was a disaster. I don't know what that means either.

I've tried just plain on the floor as well, since I've managed that once or twice at game jams. It didn't work, without the sleep deprivation of a game jam...

When you say discomfort, is it a sensory thing? Like your skin maybe needs the softness?

When you had it all plush and it felt amazing but the next day was bad, in what way was it bad?

Do your joints hurt? Your hips? Lower or upper back?

Maybe you have multiple things going on and your solution needs to address all of them.

@vervain not sensory, not painful. Just not comfortable. I feel like I'm doing work just to support my body's position in bed.

The softness seemed to feel okay, but I recall waking up a lot during the night and the next day I was buggered. Moreso then usual. I think.

I don't know how else to explain it; my beds just aren't comfortable and relaxing to be in. It's not a sensory thing and it's not pain.

I have another guess, and thank you for providing more explanations. What about So Many Pillows to support you in places that feel like they need extra support. Sometimes, a wedge situation where the head pillow can support upper shoulders can be really helpful. I sleep with a pillow under my upper legs when I'm on my back. When I sleep on my sides I use a pillow for my upper knee too.

@vervain yeah, maybe this is solvable by buying a bunch of different fairly firm pillows (or even blocks of foam) to use to wedge myself into position. I've more or less been doing that so far, maybe the trick is to get more

@vervain so, I was very interested to discover:

Experiment: I wedged myself in place, actually using a hard foam roller at my back. It felt quite comfortable.

Results: I still slept poorly, and woke up with my hip sore!

Conclusion: maybe I'm sleeping badly because I move around at night trying to alleviate pressure on my hip?

I'll look up occupational therapists, too, I'd forgotten about that. I spent a day phoning up physios and getting absolutely nowhere...

@Hyperlynx possibly some flexibility work, so your body can more comfortably conform to the shape of the mattress?
