so I found this book on the history of corporal punishment as a kink and this is apparently the oldest reference to it the author could find and idk, the phrasing of this is very funny to me:

screenshot from a pdf of a quote in a non-fiction book, which reads as such:
"But what you could not so readily believe upon my Affirmation, was that there are Persons who are stimulated to Venery by Strokes of Rods, and worked up into a Flame of Lust by Blows; and that the Part, which distinguishes us to be Men, should be raised by the Charm of invigorating Lashes. But I will convince you, my Friend Cassius, that it is so. (pp. 5-6)"

    Okay this is actually fascinating.

One of the oldest, and for literally centuries, most popular explanations for why some men were into getting beaten was a belief that there bodies were colder than others, and that by hitting them there body temperature would increase and this would allow them to actually get aroused.
