CSS quick tip: if you're adding quotation characters use `open-quote` and `close-quote` as content because they consider the document language. 💪

@stefan TIL, thanks.
@stefan Ha, a CSS bit I forgot. Thanks!
@stefan They work on <q>, too, don't they?
Like, inline quotes would be even more apt than block quotes.
@andre jep Browser defaults for q include these. :)
@stefan 👀 TIL, thanks for sharing.
Wow… thanks!
@stefan oh hey thanks for the shout-out! 🙂
@stefan learned something new, thank you 😍
@stefan I've played around with these before, but doesn't this mean that when highlighting text to copy, the quotes aren't highlighted? At least in my testing. Since the text isn't actually part of the content
@smlavine@fosstodon.org @stefan@front-end.social Firefox seems to have hard coded an exception to insert an ASCII " for any regardless of languages, while Chrome does nothing as if these are just simple CSS pseudo elements.
There’s a proposal to make these quotation marks copyable.

@stefan What typeface is that?
@queerthoughts Left it's Monaco and right Helvetica I think. :)
@stefan Some (waving at @jyasskin) disagree with the advice to use <q>. I'm leaning more towards "fix the browser", but be aware: https://hachyderm.io/@jyasskin/112130381502947889
@chrysn @stefan I think the OP is saying "if you're generating content anyway, use these values instead of literal quotes." My argument is that you shouldn't generate content that users might want to copy or search for (until after browsers are fixed), but there are probably some uses for quotes that don't need to be copied.
@stefan Wow, this is so cool 🤯 Are you aware if there is an equivalent HTML entity? To better be able to style hanging quotes, I often like to put them in markup instead of CSS
@klickreflex @stefan <q></q>
