A long time ago, I worked for someone who claimed that Linux (and Debian) would never be popular because no one can decide how they're pronounced: lee-nooks, lye-nucks… deeb-yun, deb-ee-ann, etc.

He was obviously wrong.

But I do feel this comment every time I think about reducing reliance on GitHub, and using Forgejo. (Same goes every time I hear someone stumble over how to pronounce Xogot…)

On the weekend, when riding public transit, the automated announcement said “Doors will open on the right." (en français) and the 14-year-old started to argue “how can they even say the right? what if I'm facing backwards?!” so I explained that they always mean direction of travel, but continued to face his resistance.

It felt like when I used to participate in Hacker News discussions, and someone inevitably would try to reduce conventions to first principles.

This is HN shade, not 14YO shade.

Wow. Someone should write some science fiction about how replacing humans with hyped machines doesn't work out.

Guess I didn’t take any photos once it started, but the Angine de Poitrine show at the #Montreal Jazz Festival tonight was pretty great (despite the overflowing crowd).

In fact it was the second best made up language lyrics show I’ve been to in the last year. (-; (Sigur Rós last fall.)

Siri (Beta) is really interesting.

On one hand, I don't have to trust any new parties with my data. Apple already has it since they have my mobile devices, so if they were going to maliciously steal (e.g.) my email contents, they could already do that. This opens the door to a whole bunch of LLM + data based interrogation that I wouldn't trust with other providers.

…on the other hand, the "on-device only" Siri falls over immediately when disabling the internet connection…

I recently acquired an old Dell server for my homelab setup. I haven't touched real enterprise hardware in quite a long time. It's been a good [re]learning experience.

Let me just say this, though: putting a second computer inside the server for management (IPMI/iDRAC in this case) is genius, and it's a REALLY nice safety net.

(Short version for the unaware: independent console access and server configuration in a web UI on its own ethernet port. e.g. can reboot server and not management UI.)
