There's the horrible iOS style NSAlert on Mac. I could probably go on and on if I thought about it for a while.

The Mac has become more and more like iOS over the years, even if you're using AppKit!

And how many new native Mac apps have AppleScript support, for example? That used to be pretty standard, now it's practically nonexistent.

There's no "resurgence" of AppleScript. There's only Shortcuts, which is a half-baked, limited, iOS-style successor.

The thing is that Apple is self-destructing its own native frameworks and UI. I feel that Gruber is judging against 2026 lowered standards rather than past higher standards.

If we knew in 2018 that in 2026 so-called "native" Mac apps would have forced iOS-style rounded rect icons, rounded rect windows, semi-transparent UI elements, no differentiation between enabled and disabled keyboard shortcuts in the main menu, etc., what would Gruber think?

There's no reason to celebrate the foundation of our plutocracy. Perhaps it was the best compromise available at the time, but times change. Practically everything has changed in 250 years, even the plutocracy, though not for the better: modern technology under the control of the plutocrats brings tyranny and devastation.

In 1776 the fastest mode of transportation and communication over land was the horse.

Technological change over the past 250 years has totally reshaped society, yet we remain burdened with an inflexible Constitution, amended only 27 times, only 8 in the past century, 1 of the 8 to repeal an earlier amendment, only once in the past 55 years. The last amendment, on Congressional pay raises, was proposed over 200 years before ratified.

Our political system is hopelessly outdated and gridlocked.

This is the dirty secret behind all so-called "artificial intelligence" and "machine learning": the massive amount of human labor involved.

It's happening with every area of knowledge, not just software engineering. Precariously employed academics are paid (too little) by the tech companies to train their systems in science.

AI is a scheme to enrich the few by demonetizing knowledge workers.

It would be great if the news media could give at least half as much coverage to the Supreme Court decision in the case of National Republican Senatorial Committee v. Federal Election Commission as they do to celebrity weddings.

I don't think it's accurate anymore to say that Apple is a hardware company. Of course hardware is still important, but services are approaching equal importance.

The Sanders tweet was poorly worded, but an earlier tweet from a Sanders aide specified $310 billion over 3 years, and indeed the Apple board authorized that much, 110 in 2024, 100 in 2025 and 2026, though the actual amount spent was a bit less than authorized.

The timing of the MacBook Neo price increase is unfortunate, but I don't think it's a death knell for the device as some are suggesting. After all, iPad and MacBook Air received even worse price increases, so MacBook Neo is still a good deal relatively speaking, and surely Apple's device vendor competitors are suffering from the same component shortages.

I would assume that Apple decided to produce MacBook Neo long before it decided on these price increases.
