The fact that this was approved by a university ethics board is something I wish I could slam in the face of every asshole here on mastodon who tried to drive me off the platform because I posted an invitation to participate in an anonymized survey once

@raphaelmorgan This! Thank you! I am the only blind person that is speaking out against this so thank you. The more important thing is that the blind community at large unquestioningly loves LLMs, AI, AI technology, and otherwise even if it violates others privacy. The common rebuke I hear from the blind individuals on here is, so why is the focus on the glasses and not on privacy itself or on mobile phones that can record you without your knowledge? Or on surveillance as a whole. They believe the anti-AI backlash is a form of ableism They say it is an anti technology backlash that’s not rooted in logic, but they are not paying attention to the mainstream concerns about privacy at large, about the truckloads of data that is a new kind of currency now.. I am sure you saw OpenAI press release using disabled individuals to market their plagiarism machines. I cannot stand mainstream AI coverage. None of the outlets even come close to talking about legitimate concerns

Posts like these ‘what’s the nastiest thing you’ve eaten’ always talk about the most basic ass basic food (durian, pork intestines, natto, century egg)

I find a lot of white bread American food repulsive but you don’t find me posting shit like this

This is wild - somebody did a deep dive into the real stories behind this famous XKCD:

Knold would like to protest an utter unfairness. His humans have again invited scary humans in to work in the house, and even confined him to parts of the house where he would normally be anyway at that time of day. Unreasonable!

@SJohnRoss @emilymbender My impression is that Anthropic is mainly cultists and OpenAI is mostly scammers, but they're both a mix.

Dear Men

Say a 20yr old woman is walking on her own in town, clearly drunk or disoriented. It's a Friday, it's late. Let's say her name is Jane.

What do you think women would prefer a man should do if he encounters Jane?

Please boost for wider coverage

3. Okay, so what would convince you that a piece of software (often phrased here as "an AI", gah) is conscious/can feel pain/etc?

Honestly, I'm really tired of this extremely silly question, but here is my answer:

Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence, and I am not the one making the extraordinary claim, so it is not my job to specify what the evidence should be.

Hi all a bit of good news amidst (gestures) but my friend was on strike and they won and now they all get paid more and that's very cool. Thank you to those who donated to their strike fund, I think I posted the link a while ago.

Btw it was their first ever strike, and it was at a cancer research institute. At least one worker makes an additional £10,000/year now which is a 52% pay rise!

In related news, pot-plant watering can wasn’t flowing well at all so I checked for a blockage. #frogtober
