Today’s new word is “sgwd”, which is a southern welsh term for waterfall I hadn’t heard of before. I can’t seem to find its etymology though… rhaeadr, the word for waterfall I’m familiar with is well attested, but all I can find out about sgwd is that maybe it comes from chute or jet, as in the thing that might feed a water wheel?
An alpine pasture full of crocuses (probably colchicum montana rather than proper crocuses) with the peaks of big and little astazu in the background (little astazu appearing to be higher from this viewpoint).
It is annoying that neither bluesky, nor the default mastodon web ui, nor ivory (the ios client I generally use to drive mastodon) can render 4 square photos in a sensible way… everyone has to squash them into ill-fitting landscape-oriented oblongs. I know neither site is really aimed at being a photo gallery, but I feel like *tesselating squares* ought be to easier, you know?
No-mow-may, didn’t-want-to-mow-june, and now too-hot-to-mow-july. The oxeyes are mostly over, but we have wild carrots now which are nice, even if they aren’t quite as pretty.
Well, no-mow-may segued into didn’t-want-to-mow-june, on account of how nice the oxeye daisies sprouting in the lawn looked. So now we have some new free flowers growing next to them. More details in the alt text.
Holyhead getting smote this evening, and the iphone struggling a bit to cope.
Something I haven’t seen so often: bushy usnea lichen thriving on a live blackthorn twig which is blossoming. Seems like usually lichen does best on dead tags and branches, but just here the two are happily coexisting.
It must be spring time, because the trampolines are migrating.
Does your clock really need a full Box2D physics model. No. But is does make it a lot more fun.
This is my BadClock™.
It runs late when you don’t wind it. Hands fall off when you’re too rough and it forgets how DST works. So it may adjust your clock in the wrong direction. Or not. Who knows.
Another one that seems like it should be easier to identify… maybe ochrolechia parella? It had thoroughly colonised all of the exposed surfaces of this old stone wall. There are some other species tucked in the gaps… I see some cladonia cups, but that’s as much as I can name.
Things you can see in places with clean air and plenty of rain. Not enough of either where I spend most of my time.
The papery looking lichen might be Platismatia glauca, and I’m guessing the fluffy one is an Usnea but I don’t know what kind.
Some squill growing out a patch of moss and dirt at the side of a road. We get some nice weeds here, sometimes. I’m not sure what the tiny 8-petalled white flowers are though, might need to do some more investigation there.
I’ve only been away a few days, and it feels like all the late winter flowers are coming out at once.
Federation is nice, but fact that users have to deal with the consequences of their administrator’s personal beefs is pretty shit.
The fact that this sort of thing can happen silently and has to be inferred by the people affected after the fact is even more shit.

Morning toadstool.
