I recently discovered a marvelous thing: instead of prompting an LLM, you can also prompt... yourself? Like, you express a desire for a drawing of a cat and then... an appendage of your choice picks up a pencil? And a cat is drawn? I'm still not quite sure how this works
This is spot on.
> Maybe “apps should focus on content” is wrong.
I really hate the trend that the Play/Pause button is in the middle of the screen. Now, it fades away, BUT you can still press them! Hitting the middle of the screen pauses the video!
I hate it so much.
Just put a toolbar on the side, people. The video is less wide than the phone anyway. Give me buttons I can press. https://pdx.social/@louie/114788680996679260
"for the moment... there's considerable belief in the power and potency of #LLMs: a belief that is convenient for a lot of people but also fundamentally irrational" — I'm very slightly misquoting @iris_meredith here, but I doubt this will cause offence.

Monthly creation of new AI bad debt slows, as lenders wonder if they're issuing just a bit too much in future defaults

> AI-related debt issuance globally dropped to $23bn in September, less than half the amount raised in the previous month, according to data compiled by Morgan Stanley, which covers both public bonds and private placement transactions. New financing has steadily fallen since the market hit a peak in June, when companies raised a record $113bn to help pay for infrastructure critical to the technology, including data centres and chips.
> In the US investment-grade market, where blue-chip tech groups borrowed around $306bn between January and August, AI-related bond issuance ground to a halt last month.

I've warned before that any FOSS project incorporating AI output is doing so at their peril.
Previously people leaned on a federal circuit ruling that was *declined to be taken up by the supreme court* interpreting it as a free-for-all to LLM license-wash any project in translation, or really to incorporate any such materials and they would be public domain.
But that doesn't mean we have an answer! We've yet to see!
Annnnnnnnnd: I think we're likely to have that perspective upended soon.
The third circuit issued a recent ruling in the *opposite direction* of the previously well cited federal ruling, that AI training on copyrighted material is NOT fair use: https://www.courthousenews.com/ai-training-of-copyrighted-material-not-fair-use-third-circuit/
Annnnndddddd.... with a bunch of people trying to make LLM-generated decompilation replacements for Adobe's entire suite, we're likely to suddenly see corporations rear up angrily.
Just wait till someone tries to vibewash a Nintendo game decompilation. Hey, what do you think is gonna happen?

Let it be known: you do not have permission to ignore the attribution clauses from any of my freely licensed work, including when ingesting into a model whose default operation is to strip attribution
And I will note that CC BY / CC BY-SA / Apache v2 / GPLv3 all have attribution requirements
RE: https://social.coop/@cwebber/117406652497685923
This. I have not even once gotten a response from an AI bro when I brought this up.
One of the trade-offs with publishing FOSS software is that your work gets attributed. If you don’t do that, you don’t use my work according to the terms I have published them.
And the. They look at me weird when I call it theft.

This, from Emily Bender, is the lesson we REALLY have to learn. This is part of a larger thread, which you should read.
3. Okay, so what would convince you that a piece of software (often phrased here as "an AI", gah) is conscious/can feel pain/etc?
Honestly, I'm really tired of this extremely silly question, but here is my answer:
Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence, and I am not the one making the extraordinary claim, so it is not my job to specify what the evidence should be.

I heard the “AI is just a tool” line again today.
#AI is not “just a tool”.
It’s not even a “tool”.
It sure is *something*. But it’s not a tool.
New article! This one's about the "AI is inevitable" line, and what on earth it means for a technology to be "inevitable" in the first place:
