"Building on a structured literature review, the methodology integrates in situ listening, full-spectrum acoustic recordings, acoustic analysis, interviews, and operational, environmental, and electricity market data. I explore its potential through preliminary fieldwork at hydropower stations in Norway, focusing on a grid failure that triggered changes in turbine operations and spillway flows at Vamma. Listening and triangulating recordings with operational and market data reveal connections between electricity systems, physical infrastructure, and local soundscapes. Importantly, thinking with sound also changed the questions we asked, revealing different understandings of uncertainty among researchers and hydropower operators. These initial investigations highlight both the potential and limitations of an integrated sonic methodology. They also raise questions about how existing listening modes privilege particular frequencies, environments, and actors, with implications for acoustic justice and environmental governance. I argue that listening offers more than additional data: it provides a different way of knowing energy infrastructures andl investigating the interconnected relationships between markets, technologies, water, and human and more-than-human environments."

Voting works. Even so, come 2028 we'll once again be hearing from people infected by hapless ennui or actively working on voter suppression, about how #voting is useless. "It doesn't make a difference."

Really?

Tuck this away in the memory bank, to remember come the important day.

"Amendment 6, approved by a decisive margin, sharply limits the legislature’s ability to overturn laws and constitutional amendments enacted through citizen initiatives, and its ability to revive laws voters rejected through referendums.

...

Republican lawmakers put a measure on Tuesday’s ballot to restore abortion restrictions, but voters rejected that, too. With the passage of Amendment 6, abortion opponents don’t have a clear path to try again."

Voting makes a difference and anybody claiming otherwise is lying, either by self-deception or intentionally to cause harm.

There's --always-- a good reason to vote.

This would be a great tiime to write our representatives and point out that formulating public policy and making laws to enable that policy is pointless if the executive responsible for delivering that policy ignores the law and is left free to be a lawbreaker.

Making the law and obeying the law are joined at the hip and inseparable. Duh.

Seems fairly obvious but at least among the political punditry making law and compelling obedience to the law are seen as potentially mutually exclusive. This is unaffordable confusion.

"For over a century, the “Pütter hypothesis”—that aquatic animals utilize dissolved organic matter as food—has remained a subject of debate. We provide conclusive in situ evidence validating this pathway in coral reef suspension feeders. We demonstrate that bivalves and ascidians do not rely solely on particles but actively take up and assimilate dissolved organic carbon to meet their metabolic demands. Crucially, for bivalves, this “invisible” food source appears to be their primary food source. By showing that metazoans short-circuit the microbial loop and directly compete with bacteria for dissolved organic compounds, our results necessitate a fundamental revision of carbon flux models in benthic ecosystems worldwide."

"Artificial Intelligence (AI) has disrupted assessment in higher education and accelerated an existing cycle of performativity. Institutional policies demand the demonstration of independent authorship in assessed work, yet AI models enable students to mimic independent work that is ultimately not their own. Some institutions and educators have responded by using AI text detection technologies, although their use appears contested and uneven. Within this environment, AI humanizers have emerged. These internet-based services alter AI-generated text to evade human and technological detection. Although humanizers have attracted increasing public attention, there is a dearth of scholarly literature on the subject. This paper presents the first exploratory, systematic investigation of AI humanizer websites, framed through Goffman’s sociological account of dramaturgy. Using a systematic search and custom rubric, we catalogue 55 humanizer sites, assessing their performance of identity and conducting an in-depth multimodal critical discourse analysis (MCDA) of a purposive sample of three sites. Findings reveal that humanizers appeal to students as consumers through multiple strategies, performing legitimacy work by recontextualizing their service as a rational and defensible response to surveillance, engaging in mystification by presenting their products as proprietary, advanced technologies, and drawing on symbols of authority and trustworthiness (such as university logos) to build user confidence. We argue that humanizer services form a node in an ongoing feedback loop, in which assessment requires performances of legitimacy, and those performances create demand for technologies that enable them."

And as with all well-crafted scams, a false sense of urgency created in enough gullible minds to provide a high-volume low-friction pipeline of cash into the pockets of thieves.

Bigots and fools. There's no daylight between.

I'm coming to the conclusion that the entire deportation scheme is a grift, top to bottom.

-- "Detainees" flown at vastly inflated expense hither and thither, for no obvious reason.

-- Warehouses purchased for far above assessed value, only to sit unused.

-- $1B+ in hastily awarded software contracts to major corporate supporters of the administration.

By no means is this a comprehensive accounting. Just a taste.

Theft walking on legs of bigotry.

Anyway, along those lines and for anybody saying "I don't vote because there's not difference between parties," here's yet another story to make a mockery of that hypothesis.

"James was taken to the Miami Detention Center in Bunker Hill, Indiana, a maximum-security prison that had recently started housing up to 1,000 ICE detainees under a state-federal partnership. Nicknamed the Speedway Slammer by the White House in a nod to Indiana’s connection to motor racing, the facility has faced complaints about overcrowding and medical neglect, and at least two detainees have died.

It’s a lucrative arrangement for the state that could generate $213 million in the first two years — including payments of $291 per detainee per day, over three times ICE’s median bed rate of $92. Gov. Mike Braun’s office declined to comment on James’ case."

That money flows into well-connected private hands, through the state of Florida as a conduit.

Dawning recognition that we already live on an "orbital habitat," gifted to us.

Our space station is a largely closed system in terms of physical resources but with a fusion power supply functionally adequate for any reasonable needs (also supplied for free).

We need user and technical manuals for our serendipitous habitat.

Thanks to science we already have a leg up on the "theory of operation" part, the technical manual.

For the user manual, first we need to identify what features and benefits we'd like.

Here's a stab at that.

Thinking in terms of social faux pas, missing #AltText in a public post on Mastodon is like:

For smaller tabulation divsions "late" ballots can add up to be larger than recount thresholds-- which people fight over tooth and nail.

"In early August, election workers north of Spokane, Washington, went across the street to the post office to check for late mail-in ballots. It was three days after the primary and they were expecting no more than a few dozen.

Instead, their mailbox was brimming with envelopes — more than 500 of them, each a vote that wouldn’t count. The sight was “jarring,” said Auditor Lori Larsen, a Republican who oversees voting in Stevens County.

Across the region, other election officials were getting similar jolts. In the 11 predominately rural counties in eastern Washington, nearly 2,000 ballots came in late, compared to about 600 in 2022, the previous midterm primary."

Strikes me that I can add direct observation to help illustrate the challenge.

We scan a limited number of academic journals (~150) to compose the @SkepticalScience weekly #ClimateResearch review. It's a tiny sampling of journals but typical flow is about 1,500 articles/week.

Stipulating reasonably scrupulous review and a spectrum of paper content and editorial architecture, producing this output imposes a minimum requirement of something like 3,000 volunteer reviewers needing to commit perhaps 6,000 hours per week.

Overall, ~300,000 hours per year of diligent volunteeer effort to maintain this limited collection of journals.

[And a thing of beauty to behold.]

"The rapidly growing volume of academic papers is outpacing the scientific community’s ability to critically evaluate them. This makes it increasingly important to equip the next generation of researchers with the skills that they need to become peer reviewers.

But formal curricula rarely include these skills. Universities invest years in teaching students how to design experiments and analyse data, but leave peer-review training mostly to informal mentorship.

So, how do early-career researchers — especially students and postdocs — learn to develop a critical eye?

Preprints offer a valuable opportunity for trainees to practise reviewing manuscripts outside the formal journal-review process, and several initiatives have been established with this in mind."

Capital investment in decades of painstaking research richly pays off by making a model possible:

''We find that slow bedrock adjustment weakens the stabilizing effect of glacial isostatic adjustment, allowing grounding lines to reach retrograde bed slopes more readily and triggering self-sustained retreat below the bifurcation threshold. Although the West Antarctic Ice Sheet is subject to a bifurcation, it is unlikely to experience rate-induced tipping because of the low mantle viscosity beneath the region. In contrast, the Recovery and Aurora subglacial basins are likely to undergo such a transition even under warming rates lower than those observed today.''

Personal observation pertaining to the final sentence: "whale watching" as it's done in typical commercial tourist operations using powered vessels is whale harrassment. In the US the legal distance is 100 yards, effectively no distance at all from the perspective of the whales and how they operate. Keeping a crowd of gawkers at 100 yards requires chasing the animals and the vessels adapted for this are axiomatically loud and obnoxious.

''Climate change and other anthropogenic pressures are rapidly reshaping marine ecosystems, altering prey availability and predator interactions. Yet empirical evidence of how these relationships shift under changing conditions remains scarce. Drawing on over a decade of monitoring in a subarctic fjord system, we provide a rare insight into these dynamics. In northern Norway, the winter aggregation of herring (Clupea harengus) and their primary predator, the killer whale (Orcinus orca), has shifted northward under the combined influence of climate change and fishing pressure. This redistribution has brought baleen whales into the same foraging grounds, leading to direct interference competition. Humpback (Megaptera novaeangliae) and fin whales (Balaenoptera physalus) frequently intrude into killer whale carousel feeding events, exploiting dense, shallow prey patches optimized for lunge feeding. Such intrusions often end hunts prematurely, imposing energetic costs on killer whales. Meanwhile, the rapid growth of whale-watching tourism in these fjords further disrupts foraging activity.''

"Under global warming, the marine atmospheric boundary layer shows an increase in lower-tropospheric stratification. These thermodynamic shifts alter vertical refractivity gradients and can modulate atmospheric ducts, which are natural waveguides crucial for beyond-line-of-sight electromagnetic propagation. Using ERA5 reanalysis data from 1940 to 2025, we find a global-scale intensification of atmospheric ducts over oceans at mid- to low-latitude, with a robust increasing trend in atmospheric duct occurrence probability, strength and top height. Mechanistically, this intensification is intrinsically coupled with the sustained increase in static stability in the marine atmospheric boundary layer. Although interannual climate modes, such as the El Niño/Southern Oscillation, modulate these anomalies, the long-term warming trend dominates the long-term trend. Ultimately, continuous warming is shifting the marine atmospheric background state towards a highly stratified regime favouring more frequent and intense ducting, with implications for global maritime communication, radar and navigation systems."
