@ahihi Recent AMD supports AVX-512 better than recent Intel. Intel even turned it off after the fact on some slightly older CPUs.

It was fun to show off the Raspberry Pi Zero W in a bottle which is running as a public email server.

Even here at the show, some people weren’t happy with the idea of self hosting email and wanted to say it doesn’t work. I let people send email directly to it, watch the logs via a terminal window on the Pi 400 as it’s delivered, and see the email in alpine. They could also send email using alpine to test deliverability and see delivery in the logs.

Next is a Nintendo Wii U running NetBSD showing Palemoon with @jmcwhatever‘s post about making multiprocessing work properly.

Here’re some pictures from #NetBSD at SCALE

There’s a lot of interest in NetBSD :)

First is a Raspberry Pi 400 with ctwm running as a stratum 2 NTP server. Our neighbors just happen to be the Network Time Foundation.

@socallinuxexpo

Does anyone here have an Intel N100 / N150 / N200 or similar system on which they’d be willing to run a multi-hour benchmark?

These kinds of systems are touted as being cheap and performant enough, so I’m curious, but most benchmarks are too synthetic.

I have a nice, simple bootable image that’ll compile all of NetBSD as a benchmark. All you need is 32 gigs of memory, or for whatever disk you use to be a little faster than a USB stick.

It’s 2026, and every datacenter in which I have equipment still can’t do a /31. They’re all still using four public IP addresses to give me one.

I want to help someone install Tiny Windows 11 on a computer with failed Windows.

Ok! So I check out the tiny11builder web page. Wait - in order to make the installer, you need to be running Windows?

So I have to install Windows, then download and run PowerShell in order to download and run tiny11builder, in order to make an installer, which I can then use to install Windows?

Sigh.

Sometimes it’s fun to build computers in to different containers.

This is a Raspberry Pi Zero W (not Zero 2, mind you) with a 250 gig microSD card that has a cache, a small copper heat sink, a dual 18650 UPS of sorts, and a udav USB-ethernet adapter.

Here’s an excellent writeup about the dangers of Cloudflare:

https://マリウス.com/thoughts-on-cloudflare/

Cloudflare has played a good marketing game, but those of us who aren’t led by fear and emotion know better.

Cloudflare is the #1 player in recentralizing and stratifying the Internet. If they had their way, billions of people wouldn’t be able to access Western web sites and non-mainstream OSes and browsers wouldn’t be able to browse the web.

Tell me I’m wrong, @cloudflare. Tell us how you’ve fixed issues that you’ve known about for years, such as blocking RSS feeds, blocking non-western visitors, or even issues with your abuse reporting form (which is rate limited and has all sorts of issues) and the fact that you have no mechanism for reporting domains for whom you’re the registrar and/or for whom you host DNS.

material that at common law was not protected by adoption of the First Amendment to the Constitution of the United States

They’re trying to be clever by trying to avoid First Amendment challenges by trying to exempt nothing but what the First Amendment covered when it was adopted.

I try again, and the “Preparing Ubuntu…” screen stays up forever. The fans start running at 100%. Some python program is running at 100% CPU for many minutes, so I kill it, exit “Install Ubuntu”, then relaunch.

After ages, the log says it’s waiting for a fetch of something, except there’s no network traffic. Don’t they have timeouts?

Now when I launch “Install Ubuntu”, it lets me go through the first couple of screens, then it just… exits.

Second, third time - it just exits.

Then it exits and the fans go full blast. I kill the python program again, reboot, and try again.

It exits.

Are you OK, #Linux?

I want to run lsiutil or storcli64, so I figured I’d install Linux on an external drive.

So I download Ubuntu 24.04.3 Desktop for amd64. It boots, I start an install, and a good 45 minutes later, it says there’s an error. I can’t really see what the error is here, can you?

I just installed a new battery on my test email server. Unlike the battery that’s close to absolute zero, the battery for my email server progressively lost capacity until it got to the point where it wouldn’t charge.
