now on my 4th download of iPhone15,4_26.4.1_23E254_Restore.ipsw as it turns out iOS updates are like 10 GiB nowadays and I did not have that much free space on my laptop (and idevicerestore just fails if you run out of space mid-download)

entertainingly I am using my laptop for this instead of doing an OTA update because my phone also doesn't have any storage space. maybe it'd have more if it didn't use a whole 30 GiB for "System data", whatever the fuck that is

oh incredible it failed at the same place on the work laptop (macOS Sequoia 15.7.4). I hope this is just old macOS not knowing how to do the thing, but I fear I have lost all my data by trying to update when I have like 0.3 GiB disk space left on the phone

nope, a Revive with Apple Configurator 2 also failed for the same reason! guess I'm probably losing my Signal messages and anything else that doesn't go in iCloud Backup :scam:

@eta Any chance you can back up the iPhone to your computer over USB in recovery mode using iTunes? It's been a while since I last had an Apple device, but back then that was an option

@mart_w I think we tried that with apple configurator 2 and it did not like it; I've taken the restore hit now anyways
