I kind of actually really appreciate XMPP's commitment to the bit in not making the server too stateful. like they really don't want to just give in and make phones dumb clients! the protocol is insistent on being fundamentally store-and-forward; you will collect your messages eventually

I've been getting back in to XMPP a bit lately (blame @unlobito) and one thing I was curious about is how they seem to have solved the problem of push notifications in group chats on iOS, since those never worked back in 2020 for me -- and it turns out it's actually really clever, at least on ejabberd which is the server software I'm using!

they have this module called mod_push_keepalive where basically they keep your session open for like 72 hours, with XEP-0198 Stream Management which lets your TCP connection drop without totally logging you out. and then when that 72 hours is nearly up they send an XEP-0357 Push Notification to wake up the iOS app in the background and get it to renew the session (which they can do thanks to a fancy entitlement, see here for more).

so as long as your phone keeps checking in you'll stay online on XMPP, which means you won't drop out of any group chats, and everything kinda just works!
