For some reason, everyone’s watching Spock scanning. Ah. The debris of the USS Beagle. In four years, the debris went a sixtieth of a parsec.

Came from a planet similar to Earth but with proportions exactly like Earth in the pre-atomic era.

Uhura picks up radio transmissions and play it for the bridge staff. The police round up dissidents before going to “sports.” Gladiator games. Characters have English names.

Ah, the English name comes from the flight officer of the Beagle, who is at least one survivor.

Kirk prepares for an away mission. Theme some.

For some reason, Kirk and his boyfriends beam down in their usual uniforms but far away from the city. Bones and Spock bicker gently. They’re not allowed to interfere but allow that doesn’t relate to their clothes or equipment. Unseen figures shoot at them and then come up to arrest them.

The lead guy wears shorts which is a little funny. Septimus, an older guy, says they’re people of peace. The triad say they are too. The guy who caught them disagrees but is overruled after Jim call his “boat.)

The captain of the Beagle has apparently a very bad boy.

Flavius and the boyfriends are captured trying to sneak in the city. The police identify them as barbarians because of Spock’s ears.

Jim tells the guard to tell Marrikus, first citizen, about Jim.

Flavius is tapped for the morning games.

There are three guards who want the boyfriends to come out. The boyfriends take their guards but the first citizen shows up with more. He recognizes them and decides to take them to brunch.

Marrikus says not to judge him before knowing the facts.

Unlike the Nazi planet world, Marrikus went over to the Proconsul’s side rather than trying to institute his own view onto the planet.

At gunpoint, the Proconsul demands the captain send down men to participate in The games.

Jim plays a quick hand, saving his crew for the moment. The boyfriends are sent away to die in the arena.

Scotty gives a log, explaining Kirk’s cryptic message.

Scotty has a creative workaround for Kirk’s order but we won’t find out about it yet.

Achilles and Flavius will fight Bones and Spock to the death while Kirk is forced to watch at gunpoint. Achilles is happy to fight Spock but Spock avoids the conflict as best he can.

Bones and Flavius fight pathetically until the Romans whip Flavius. Flavius must school Bones as they fight.

Jim tries to bluff the Proconsul and Marrikus helps.

Even in standard def, it’s obvious they used a stunt double for some of Bones’s shots.

The Romans consider it a foul when Spock helps Bones. The Proconsul wants Jim or Marrikus to say it’s ok to execute Bones and Spock for their party foul.

The Proconsul tries to use a woman as the carrot to his stick but Jim can’t think about that while his boyfriends are in trouble.

Bones and Spock have a relationship conversation and their worries about their other boyfriend, Jim.

Jim lets the woman feed and then kiss him. He’s woken by the Proconsul. The Proconsul insults Merrick and makes him leave. The Proconsul will let Jim die as a man and the same for Spock and Bones eventually.

Meanwhile, Scotty will disrupt the power grid.

Jim gets a prime time death.

Flavius interrupts the fight and is shot dead.

Jim knocks the others out and steals a gun. He rescues his boyfriends but their victory is short lived.

It was Merrick who stole the communicator. He calls the enterprise for a rescue but he didn’t have enough time to save himself. Jim gives Scotty a commendation for creatively following the prime directive in saving them.

Uhura’s big moment is explaining the pun about the Son of God.

This episode proves the writers have no idea about history. Thoughts in a bit.

The shorts are weird. I have a sudden flashback from decades ago of an Irish friend talking about the difficulty of getting used to wearing shorts in the US. That's what little boys wear with school uniforms & it's a big deal to graduate to long pants. I wonder if there's any idea like that behind the choice here, infantilizing the escaped slaves? Or just this week's limitations of the costume dept.

One of best lines from this ep:

Leave us, Merikus. The thoughts of one man to another cannot possibly interest you.

Sexist, as were the times, but such perfect shade.
