To anyone that has worked in access technology, what would be your cut off point for magnification to switch someone to a screen reader?

@ysotomayor that is not exactly a hard and fast rule because they may be able to work with a larger monitor, but I would try to nudge my students towards a screen reader if we were having to zoom in more than about 5x. It also depends too on eye fatigue.

@lerven Thank you. That's about where my cut off is. It’s funny, when I could see I was pretty much force to stick with magnification for the longest time. I think I got up to 32x. As soon as I discovered JAWS, my world changed, and for the better. I no longer had to strain my eyes. It was glorious.

@ysotomayor I no longer work in that industry. But, when I did in the early oughts, I used to say that they were getting to the point at 8, at 10, they were nearly there, and at 12, they were well beyond the point when they had to start looking at speech, Braille, or both. Some of the advice depended on whether their sight loss was progressing. If it was, then they had to start looking at speech/Braille at 8 times the magnification.
