We're doing a lot of work for the next Pi4J release. We don't have a release date yet, as several issues and pull requests are still in progress, and we want to get the API right before releasing, since V5 is the moment to clean up what we couldn’t change in a minor release. If you want to try it out, the snapshot builds are published automatically for every change on main.
