I have a tax rebate. Most of it will go back into retirement savings and some of it just bought a rather nice refurb Thinkpad but I'd like to buy myself something. I never buy myself stuff. Something fun and geeky. Calling on Mastodon for ideas. 😀

I'm randomly reminded of something long suspected in my domain, #HPC. We would probably make more progress on research problems by funding research into better #math and computer science. Politicians, however, can't have their photo taken in front of a better algorithm, but they *can* have their photo taken in front of the massive bank of blinkenlights on the expensive new compute cluster.
