propublica.org/article/draftki one way to think of companies like this is as places for manufacturing the belief that their behavior is acceptable. the PR rep this journalist speaks with has a ready answer for why these policies are totally reasonable and not, directly downstream of the 2018 SC decision, a trade of human blood for money.
capitalism is the most effective system ever devised for creating groups of humans who believe that predatory, inhumanly evil behavior is normal and good.

@jplebreton I definitely think that it's become far too socially acceptable to work in the gambling industry. "Prediction market" companies like Kalshi are just gambling with a new fancy sounding name. Most people seem to treat gambling as some "harmless bit of fun", personally I've never understood what's supposed to be fun about throwing your money away. It's an exploitative/destructive industry that for the most part preys on addicts and the least educated members of society.

@fraggle @jplebreton I ended up boycotting a whole radio station that played a lot of music I liked because they have become dependent on dodgy online casinos for their funding which is no better from the days when these stations were pirates and not just broadcast illegally but funded their station from laundered drugs money..

@gbsills @jplebreton : do you have any good read about the societal impact of "prediction markets" and online gambling platforms?

I mean, if you work at a company with the explicit goal of making college educated women have less power, it's a hard sell to get a college educated woman to like you.

That guy better start hitting his face with a hammer ASAP.

@jplebreton NGL looking back I could be 3 x ing my income if I worked on AI for a company but the second I realized the moral costs of the job offering I was out. These people have a choice and it is a hard one as I know from first experience but everything has a cost weight.

Plus nothing beats exploring the technology on your own and knowing there is no deadline and no one it is going to harm.
