i have found netware 5 to be very temperamental, and run into all the same sorts of issues you did.

i'd suggest giving netware 4.11 a try.

i have a lot more good experiences with 4.11, and it would probably work on your original test pc's specs, if poorly. and it doesn't even have java or a gui at all.

i run a netware 4.11 network across both real hardware and VMs in qemu/proxmox, i've actually found it really useful with vintage OSes
