i now have NetBSD sources in my homelab mounted over NFS across multiple machines

tomorrow i will probably be building some kernels

people on the internet are interested in information about NetBSD. i have been training for this for years

if you are a new #NetBSD user here is a good way to think about what to expect on NetBSD:

NetBSD 11.0 runs about equally as well on my Sega Dreamcast or a 30 year old Pentium II PC as it does on any modern computer that i have. this goes both ways.

to know whether your modern gaming pc will be able to do something, you should first ask yourself: "could i do this on a Sega Dreamcast or a 30 year old Pentium II PC?". if the answer is yes, you will probably succeed! if the answer is no, it still might be possible, but here be daemons.

for example:

- can i ssh into it and edit files and compile little programs?
yes! absolutely! definitely.
- can i run a webserver?
indeed you can.
- can i install Steam?
hahahahaha no.
- can i run X11?
yep! may need to do some tweaking depending on your hardware though.
- can i run KDE plasma?
outlook not so good.

this is Puppy.

if you walk into my office/lab then he will meow hello at you.

if you do not respond, he will follow up with an angry-sounding meow that means "say hi back".

type of girl who uses computers with 16MiB of ram, and also uses computers with 1TiB of ram, and runs the same operating system on both

thanks #NetBSD

looking through photos and found one of the "NetBSD corner" at my work desk in 2019

linux: # dd if=./some-bootable.img of=/dev/sdb bs=1M status=progress oflag=direct conv=notrunc

netbsd: # progress -f ./some-bootable.img dd of=/dev/sd1d bs=1048576 oflag=direct conv=notrunc

i would like a gcc backend that targets the intel 286

i have done netboot and nfsroot with it before, but it is really sluggish...

i would post a NetBSD/vax dmesg but my vax's scsi emulator died so that's going to have to wait until i can replace or repair it

updated netbsd on my canoeboot dell e6400, from 10.1 to 11.0

that it has as good support as it does is, frankly, astounding. but it will not know what to do with your gaming rig or laptop made in the last 5 years

for all the positive things i've said about NetBSD over the years

i have never claimed it to have good GPU support

i haven't seen this in years

look. i went to lan parties i was a toddler. i was maybe 5 years old at my first quakecon. i can't not get bawls when i go to microcenter

i went to microcenter because they sent me a coupon for a free 128gb flash drive and also i needed some other things. but then i found the other things and they were too expensive. so i looked around to see if there was anything else i needed and all of that was also too expensive. so i just got some bawls and my free flash drive

this is basically exactly what i was emailing my congressperson (Jamie Raskin) about a few months ago. this is exactly what i want to see

dmesg log: NetBSD/evbarmv6hfeb 11.0 (big endian ARM) on Raspberry Pi 0W
