Progressive Mass has a voting guide for the 9 referenda we have in front of us this year. Short version: vote no on 3, 5 and 8.

Today is one of those days where several different projects have converged at @spritely. In 2024, @cwebber made a federated relay system for OCapN. In 2025, I made a prototype of a local-first chat program that does CRDT data sync over OCapN. Over the past few months, @tsyesika has added end-to-end encryption to the relay system. And just now, at last, @tsyesika and I had an end-to-end encrypted chat using two relays that federate over Tor and it all just worked!!! its-happening.gif

If you're going to destroy the things I'm most passionate about then you will just have to read some acerbic comments over the internet. That's the deal.

I can't be nice in LLM discourse because I think the Torment Nexus is an existential threat, sorry.

Enjoy your website that is now overrun with sealioning LLM boosters! I'm out!

pushcx has now deleted many more of my comments and threatened to ban me. I'm so done.

JUSTICE FOR
THE
DOLLS

We stand in solidarity with The Dolls of Berlin and queer community centre Casa Kuà.

(⬇️ donation links at the bottom of the post)

The Dolls is a transfem community in Berlin that also does education on (DIY) HRT, these are essential resources for trans people in need of healthcare.

Last Sunday, Casa Kuà, the place where The Dolls held their event, got raided by the police. Everyone present got ID'ed, and detained. Allegedly, HRT and supplies were confiscated. Trans healthcare is not a crime, it's a bogus charge. The Dolls were doing nothing illegal, yet they were met with state violence.

The events of Stonewall and the Institut für Sexualwissenschaft are repeated right before our eyes.

Healthcare is a right, but all too often people do not have access to it. For trans healthcare this is unfortunately commonplace. Some are required to find healthcare outside of systems that are inaccessible and gatekeeping.

This will happen, period. You cannot stop people from seeking and getting life-saving gender-affirming healthcare. But there is a difference in whether this happens with the guidance of a loving and caring community or not.

HRT education, injection safety and trans communtiy are crucial and life saving. The Dolls are here to stay!

The Dolls and Casa Kuà have a fundraiser. And they could really use the money, also for potential legal expenses. So if you can spare an euro or two, or more, that'd be really nice and cool.

We stand with The Dolls. Community is not illegal. Healthcare is not a crime.
International solidarity!

So how many FOSS orgs are choosing to not use genAI at all? Obviously I know @spritely takes that stance, because I work there.

But who else?

Godot, maybe? (They played with it for a bit then enacted a policy against it, IIRC.) The Document Foundation, though I am not sure by what degree? Zig, certainly.

But who else? The room seems to be shrinking, alas :\

a computer cannot be chubby. therefore a computer cannot be hubby

a point in favor of QUIC: it supports both reliable and unreliable communication over the same socket, so you could multiplex OCapN (reliable) and a video stream (unreliable).

> Last I'll post about this, but Elon Musk disagrees with me. This means I am onto something, and I feel more valid in my opinion than ever.

My hero, making well loved free culture assets slop free for ages which nearly everyone in gamedev at some point use, literally speaking truth to power

@bkuhn Thing is, even though you could be at odds with Raymond or with Red Hat, you could still view them as objective allies because in practice we were all contributing to the free software commons that we saw as artifacts for user empowerment.

But that’s no longer the case: big tech has been freeriding, and now they’re building their ideal of free software without free software activists—destroying the commons we built as they move forward.

@copiesofcopies @cwebber

@bkuhn I'm kinda gobsmacked by this TBH. I agree that it is reasonable to use proprietary tech to build non-proprietary, etc. (of course) but I've always known you to have a pretty high bar against using proprietary tech.

All other considerations aside - and that's a lot of considerations - ISTM that there's nothing Claude offers that you can't do with your brain, though slower.

And Anthropic's moral compass is... um, lacking. It makes some of the late 90s and early 2000s tech shenanigans almost seem quaint.

This kinda broke my brain, really. I wouldn't have been shocked to hear that you'd tinkered with Claude just to see whether its output was violating licenses, etc. But kinda shocked to find you'd actually use its output in a codebase.

@copiesofcopies @cwebber

Some other reliable protocols built on UDP (or IP) are 1) RUDP, made by Bell Labs for Plan9, which has a draft RFC from 1999 and 2) SCTP, notably used by WebRTC. I think I can rule out SCTP as a good fit because it has multistreaming (like QUIC) and multihoming which are both unnecessary for OCapN. RUDP seems much simpler but anything that was ever deployed seems to use something that forks from the draft spec, but perhaps it's a good starting point.

@tusharhero idk, I think this is a perfect example of centrism taken to its logical conclusion

mods have multiple times implied that the problem with the situation is that people aren't nice enough to those that come in and destroy our communities

the year of betrayal continues: https://lobste.rs/s/h0eate/updates_site_guidelines_ai_llm_tags

admittedly I have been expecting this for a while, but lobsters just removed the vibecoding tag, which formerly allowed you to filter slop stories out of your front page

this was the one thing that was keeping that site tolerable to use in the deluge of crap

hate to cede this to the celery men but I don't really see myself continuing to use that site now that the mods are showing their true colors

the site had its problems, but the lobsters IRC channel on libera chat has up till now been quite good, and I'll be sad to say goodbye

You can't really have success as a lobsters user if you let your disdain for genAI show in your comments, but I'm not interested in debating Torment Nexus advocates.

and, of course, the best discussion happens right here on the fediverse!

I went read-only mode on reddit years ago and I guess I'm doing the same for lobsters. It feels weird to say this but despite lobsters having better moderation practices on paper, HN is the better place for discussion even though there's a lot more techbro noise.

My comment was saying that every crisis is an opportunity and that maybe linux becoming ensloppified will be the catalyst for the advancement of secure microkernels.
